My approach blends traditional, critical analysis with modern, business-oriented goal setting.
Diagnostic Assessment: I never start a class without understanding the student's needs. The first session involves a brief diagnostic (reviewing past papers, essays, or a short writing sample) to pinpoint specific weaknesses—whether they are grammatical, structural, or analytical.
The "Why" Method: Instead of simply correcting mistakes, I focus on explaining the principle behind the error. For example, rather than just fixing a run-on sentence, we discuss clause structure and the flow of ideas, teaching them how to self-edit.
Iterative Writing Cycle: Writing is taught as a process. Students draft, I provide detailed, actionable feedback (often using tools like Google Docs for collaborative editing), they revise, and then we review the improvement. The focus is always on revision and growth, not just the final grade.
Active Literature Engagement: For literature, I use methods like Socratic questioning to draw out critical interpretations, ensuring the student is the one building the argument, not just memorizing notes.
