About Harvey
I am Harvey Urwin, a 3rd year Computer Science student and dedicated nerd who has been programming and working with computers for most of my life. As a fundamental part of modern life I believe that an understanding of computers as logical machines is key to any understanding of programming and this is the main lesson I wish to impart on my students. Namely, that Computers are not smart and so "thinking like a computer" is actually relatively easy. It is just about finding analogies and real world examples that you understand. In doing so I hope to combat the daunting nature of some programming languages/concepts in Computer Science by explaining them with a greater focus on practical learning and discussion/questioning.

My teaching methods centre around fostering an understanding of concepts within programming and computer science more broadly through discussion, example and practical work. When teaching a new concept or programming language I aim first to spend some time assessing a student's understanding of its underlying logic. What is its purpose? How does it operate? How is it used? I do this through discussion of concepts in a structured lesson plan supported by worked examples and a linking of unknown concepts to known, real world examples. Once a strong foundational knowledge has been set, I move on to practical work in order to test and cement this knowledge. This could be in the form of either pre-set projects (like recreating a retro game) or any of the student's choosing. I tutor ages 11-18 of all levels and confidence.
