About Olivia

Hello! I'm Olivia and I'm currently in my 3rd year studying medicine at the University fo Sheffield. I am fascinated by problem solving and have a passion for learning that I hope to instil in my students. Four years of tutoring experience have helped me to understand how tot tailor each lesson to the need of every individual student and having had to sit many exams, I know the importance of understanding content fully. I was the 'guinea pig' year group with the 1st full set of number graded GCSE exams, so I have the experience of sitting the current syllabus and answering the new style of questions. I also had to sit the UCAT and BMAT entrance exams, so I can offer advice about balancing university applications with A Levels. Despite having an unconventional 1st year with the pandemic, I love being a medical student and hope to help and guide others towards achieving their aspirations.

I offer the 1st session for free as a 'get to know me' session to discuss current grades and how you would like to progress. I like to set out a lesson structure that suits the student, so discussing how you like to learn, what you find difficult etc. helps me to understand how to make the most of our sessions. I usually start and finish a session with an exam question so that students can see how they have developed their understanding. Closer to exam season, I can also help with recapping content and give advice on revision.

About the lesson

My lesson structure is variable to fit the needs of my students. I like to use a variety of techniques to teach, usually starting lessons with a starter activity that may be going through answers to questions that I have previously set, testing knowledge from a previous lesson or an activity that gauges a starting point for the topic that will be covered in the current lesson. I then spend the bulk of the lesson going through the content that the student has requested; I find it incredibly helpful for the students to decide which topics they are particularly struggling with as this allows them to reflect on their own learning. I usually finish a lesson with some exam-style questions to ensure that the student has understood and absorbed the content- this then shows me whether I have taught the student in a style and manor that suits their learning as well as establishing where more work needs to be done. I also tend to set a short activity for the student to do in their own time without my input to ensure that they are understanding the content and my way of teaching so that I can make any amends to better suit the individual student.
