My classes are fun, highly participative and discussion-based whenever possible. I have an extensive set of skills that I have applied to diverse student cohorts over my 30 years of teaching, but they all share a student-centered approach, one that is highly responsive to the students' individual needs. I am naturally adaptive and slightly rebellious, rarely re-using the exact materials from one course to the next, always updating things and incorporating new tools. I have mostly been in curricular English and non-curricular Spanish, and the duties of these two are quite different. My courses at the university have been for full course credit and letter grades, which implies a large ethical commitment to academic rigor, transparency and fairness. A fundamental component to my university courses is the power of debate to stimulate critical thinking. I also have a strong communicative grammar background, so I try to weave grammar into our discussions whenever possible. I write much of my own material in terms of focused grammar, tailoring it to my student demographic. Moreover, I have become trained at my university to certify incoming international teaching assistants, which is exclusively based on their oral English and presentation skills. My knowledge of phonetics and pronunciation is extensive, specializing in Spanish speakers and speakers of Chinese, Japanese and Korean. I even taught a group of Japanese teens for three years in a row, writing a special curriculum for their age group and needs. Overall, I need to maintain motivation, so I focus on controversial topics for adults, fun topics for teens. With any language class we need to stay mindful of the lexico-grammatical interplay in language learning; grammar does not exist in isolation and nor does vocabulary. In writing classes I have used a process-writing approach to help students develop their rhetorical and language structure skills. As for tools, I am fully technically proficient in Zoom, Blackboard, Google Docs, Moodle, Cambridge and Canvas.
