About Atticus

I am an experienced vocal coach and professional accent/dialect coach with an unrivalled level of training in voice and speech. My knowledge and background enables me to teach you how to speak with ease and confidence. I completely guarantee noticeable progress with just a few lessons.

These classes are particularly useful for those looking to gain more respect from professional peers and/or for those of whom English is a second language.

I teach full time between my private practice and working for institutions such as Fordham University, Playwrights Horizons Theater School, Stella Adler Studio of Acting and more. When in London I worked for LAMDA, Rose Bruford and RCSSD.

Accent Reduction for English as a Second Language Speakers:

Above all, accent reduction classes are designed to help you feel confident and communicate clearly. Therefore, they can be considered the last step towards native proficiency in your English language education. It is often the case that people want to soften their accent purely to speak completely understandably all the time. To clarify, the goal is not to sound exactly native but instead, close enough to native that communication is effortless and understandable. So, all courses of training offered are tailored to each person’s individual needs. I am happy to work towards whatever goals you specify for yourself and want you to be able to celebrate your identity while communicating effectively too.

Accent Reduction for Regional Native English Speakers:

Accent reduction classes for native English speakers with regional accents can help you to find clarity and confidence in speech in all situations. Importantly, all accents are wonderful and should be celebrated. I grew up with a Nottingham accent because I was born born and raised there. As a result, I have access to that part of my voice but naturally sit with an RP dialect nowadays. Therefore, I can completely empathise with the identity issues arising from judgemental views on accents. However, I also understand how frustrating it can be to be regularly misunderstood, misheard or asked to repeat yourself. In short, I possess the sensitivity and personal experience to find tailored solutions to your specific communicative issues.

My Methodology:

I operate from my own specific process that I have cultivated over the years but my training is grounded in the Haydn Rowles/Sharpe methodology of accent/dialect work. I will cover the following principles of speech with each student:

- Phonemes: The shaping of all Vowels and Consonants.
- The Articulator Muscles: Getting to know how your speech manifests.
- Problem Consonants: /r/, /h/, /l/, /ng/, /th/ and Glottal Stops.
- Intonation: Expressing yourself fully.
- Oral Posture: Setting, Zone, Direction and Tone.
- Rhoticity: How and when to pronounce the /r/ consonant.
- Intonation: Sentence, Word and Syllable Stress and Weak Forms.

We will shift focus between these features as we go depending on what I feel you need at the time. The majority of classes will be spent practicing from reading or free speech followed by feedback as I prefer to teach from a practical stand point. Speech training is a tacit knowledge transfer and so getting you talking as much as possible is absolutely key!

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am a native English speaker with over 4 years of professional training in voice and speech.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the RP accent's culture?

RP is an accent that is used by people who want to be better understood, it is not so much a regional accent but a travelling one. Therefore it's the accent for any person who has the bravery to base themselves somewhere new or to leave their comfort zone.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the RP accent that you particularly like?

The fact that specificity in sound and clarity are two key features of the accent make it a particularly generous way of talking.
  • Why does speaking in this accent matter to you?

Being understandable and confident when you talk are absolutely key to you feeling capable and avoiding becoming frustrated. Every accent is equal but it's important to be generous enough when we talk that our message and simply our words can be taken in. The RP accent is worth learning as it helps people focus on what you're saying rather than how you're saying.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this accent and what can help the process of learning?

Learning an accent or any speech training is a physical process, you have to understand that there is a detachment between your brain and the articulator muscles so we have to repeat exercises and always be applying the training during a regular day. The training works you just have to do it!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your learning or your days at school.

During my first ever voice and speech lesson I was told to not raise my shoulders when I breathed in. I thought this was impossible. It's not. It's always surprising how concrete we believe our physical habits to be, to learn a new way to do something you have to learn to be flexible with the old way.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of what you teach?

I lived in New York for three years and it was necessary to standardise my accent to RP in order to be better understood so I can empathise greatly with those who seek out lessons with myself. It's frustrating trying to fit in and not even being able to be understood but the solutions are readily available.
  • What makes you a Superprof in voice training?

Besides my extensive professional training and teaching experience I am a calm and honest character who is very flexible in my teaching approach. I like to suit each lesson and way of teaching on an individual basis. Also I've been through what my students go through!
