About Mikuni

Hello, I'm Mikuni. I'm a native Japanese person living in a Scottish Borders town for over 16 years. Much of the time, I've worked as a local café manager. So I'm very familiar with the culture here.

People describe me as kind and friendly. I can also sometimes be a bit quirky and funny, but in a friendly way. I also love the British sense of humour.

I don't have experience teaching Japanese as a career, but I've been married to my Scottish wife for over 20 years. We met in Japan and she speaks Japanese. I taught her Japanese long ago when we were in Japan. We mostly speak Japanese at home. Now, I am learning about Japanese grammar so that I can explain it if necessary. I want to make my classes more relatable and fun for everyone.

I like reading both in Japanese and English. My favourite writer is Kazuo Ishiguro. He is originally from my hometown, Nagasaki. I'm curious about many things. I love listening to all types of music. I like travelling, and Uzbekistan is my favourite country I've been to so far. But above all, I love living in Scotland.

About the lesson

I offer relaxed Japanese lessons for beginners using the Genki textbook as a base. I’m not a professional teacher, but I’ve supported my Scottish wife’s Japanese learning throughout our 20-year marriage. If you like manga, anime, or movies, we can use them as materials too! My goal is to make learning practical, relatable, and fun for everyone.
