About Ryan
My name is Ryan Slatko, and I’m a New York based jazz pianist and educator. I’ve been playing piano professionally for 9 years now, playing a multitude of genres. In New York I’ve performed at venues like Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, The Kitano, Minton’s Harlem, 55 Bar and others. I won 3rd place in the 2014 Jacksonville Piano Competition (open to all ages, all over the world) and was recently music director for award winning musical Lights Out: Nat King Cole.

Playing and teaching music has brought me a WIDE range of experiences. I’ve not only played and taught a wide variety of music, I’ve worked with people of all backgrounds, all walks of life, and all skill levels. I’ve had the opportunity to teach and/or perform alongside musicians ranging from bare beginner to top in their field.
What these experiences have done for me is shown me that there are MANY ways of doing things. There are a great many approaches to be taken when it comes to playing and teaching music. And I’ve realized is that being an educator is about finding the way that works for the student. For this reason, I’m not interested in method books because I don’t subscribe to the “one-size-fits-all” approach to teaching music. My students are INDIVIDUALS and I intend to treat them as such, catering to their specific needs and finding a way of presenting the information that works best for them. With the right mindset, I believe that ANY student can succeed and reach the highest level of playing.
