  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

Yes, Spanish is my native language, so I grew up speaking it. I was born and raised in Spain, and Spanish has always been a huge part of my everyday life. I also had the opportunity to travel and live in South America where I had the chance to learn Spanish Latino and focus better on students that want to learn this specific type of Spanish.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I would probably say Don Quixote. He is obviously a fictional character, but he has become one of the most iconic figures of Spanish culture. As well, it is known all over the world, being the second book most translated after the Holy Bible!
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

One expression I really like is: "the money of the poor person goes twice to the market" - explaining how sometimes we buy cheap, get broken and have to go back to the market again.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Because I believe that speaking a language is like having a super power. It is the way to connect with people from different parts of the world. Spanish is the third mother tongue worldwide, one of the most studied languages and is spoken in more than 20 countries.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

I help my students a lot with matching the gender and number. Also, one of the most difficult things about the Spanish language is how we have many tenses in verbs, way more than in English.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Once, during my Erasmus in Italy, I proposed a game. As we were all from different countries, we sat in a circle and had to speak in our mother tongue. We would ask a question to the person on our right, and that person had to say what they thought they had been asked, then answer it and ask another question to the person on their right.

After this experiment, we saw how language is 50% of communication, while the real willingness to be understood and to understand the question was the other 50%
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

As mentioned above, I have lived in Mexico for half a year and travelled to other countries in South America. This experience provided me with additional vocabulary, expressions and cultural knowledge from these countries that I can use to teach my students.

Many of them plan to travel to South America or have a partner from there, so we do role-plays where I adapt to their country and research more information about it on the internet to increase my knowledge of that specific country.
