About Daniel

I started violin properly in my thirties, years after most people who play seriously had already begun, and I spent a long time convinced I'd started too late to ever really progress. Nine years of teaching and about one hundred fifty students later, I've turned that late start into the exact thing that helps me connect with nervous beginners today. I don't have a conservatory background, and I mention that early with new students, because I think it puts a lot of adults at ease who feel embarrassed picking up an instrument later in life. Most of my students are grown-ups, often parents finally getting round to something they always wanted to try, though I teach teenagers too when they land in my studio. My own violin teacher was remarkably patient with me during some genuinely frustrating early months, and I try to give that same patience back to every single student now. I keep lessons honest rather than falsely encouraging, telling people clearly what's working and what still needs effort, because I think adults especially appreciate straight talk over empty praise. If you've ever thought violin might be off the table for you now, I'd genuinely love to prove that idea wrong.

About the lesson

I picked up violin as an adult, later than almost everyone I met at the time, so I know firsthand how intimidating this instrument looks before you've even touched a bow. We start slow, really slow, just getting comfortable holding the instrument and making a decent sound before worrying about anything fancy. I explain bow hold and posture in plain physical terms, the way it was eventually explained to me after several confusing attempts elsewhere, rather than technical jargon that assumes prior knowledge. Intonation is taught patiently through repetition, and I'm upfront that it takes time, because I remember how discouraging it felt when a teacher made it sound like everyone else "just gets it" faster. Simple, recognisable tunes come in early, adapted to beginner level, since dry exercises alone nearly made me quit violin altogether in my first few months. I keep practice goals small and specific, because vague instructions like "just practise more" never actually helped me improve back when I was starting out myself. Every small win gets acknowledged out loud, because adult beginners especially need to hear that progress is happening, even when it feels painfully slow some weeks. I never pretend this instrument is easy, because it isn't, but I promise it gets easier.
