About Thomas

Throughout my college career, I have been highly active in the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Within this organization, we focus on helping students develop professional skills and build successful careers. These experiences of growing not only my own professional capabilities but also supporting those around me, along with mentoring numerous students over the years, have strengthened my ability to effectively help others. I believe my personal journey could also serve as inspiration to students. As a low-income, first-generation college student who secured an engineering internship at NASA, my path demonstrates how determination and support can lead to significant achievements despite challenging circumstances.

About the lesson

Throughout my life, I have always been a natural tutor, even before formally recognizing it. During middle school and high school, I regularly offered assistance to my peers outside the classroom because they "liked the way I taught" - and I discovered I truly enjoyed helping others understand challenging concepts. When I began my professional career at the University of Texas at El Paso, I secured a position as an engineering tutor at the Advancement Center for Engineering Students (ACES), which provided tutoring services for mathematics and engineering courses. There, I helped grow the center's reputation through my ability to adapt teaching methods to each student's needs. My effectiveness led to sessions where I was simultaneously tutoring 6+ students across different courses. While my educational background and experience make me a good tutor, what makes me an excellent one is my attention to detail and personalized approach. I carefully assess each student's learning style, comprehension level, and specific needs to create tailored tutoring methods. This individualized approach helps students not only grasp difficult concepts but gain confidence in their abilities. I pride myself on reliability and consistency, ensuring students receive dependable support throughout their academic journey. My commitment to their success extends beyond simply explaining material - I invest in understanding their challenges and celebrating their achievements.
