About Mikaela

I am a 21 year old female student at Curtin University studying Accounting and Finance, and have been learning and playing guitar since I was 8 years old.

I started lessons through a scholarship for gifted students, and have continued my studies of classical music through to this day. Since leaving school in 2015, I have been teaching students privately from the ages of 5 through to 85 with much success, and find it very rewarding to see my students progress and enjoy guitar with a passion almost as great as my own.

A few other things that you may find interesting about me is that I enjoy performing in the odd pub, and I love to sing and play my guitar (and I also often encourage this in students lessons if they love to sing!). I also tutor a range of school subjects such as English, Maths and Science to help put students ahead of the game and to build their confidence.

About the lesson

I firmly believe that students learning of music requires more than just lesson time, and requires practice every week. In saying this, I help my students find the motivation and inspiration within their instrument to help them not only progress, but excel in their studies!

WHAT TO EXPECT FOR YOUR FIRST LESSON:

I would love to tell you that it will be the most amazing experience of your life to finally pick up a guitar and start learning, and that when you strum the strings for the first time, that they will dazzle. Unfortunately, it wont be as cool as all that.

This lesson will be a bit of an icebreaker lesson, and we will cover all the basics of a guitar (from the string names, to parts of a guitar, and what will be expected of you). It is also very exciting as you will get to tell me what you want from lessons (if you don't know, that's okay too!), and goals you would like to set yourself.

LESSON STRUCTURE:
After the first lesson, I usually structure the lesson as follows:
1. Review homework (the mediocre part of the lesson)
2. Start some new theory work and new music (the boring part of the lesson)
3. Learn some chords/other music that you have chosen (the fun part of the lesson)
I always give feedback at the end of every lesson as well, which gives you a goal to work towards for the following lessons.

WHAT MAKES ME THE BEST TEACHER FOR YOU?
There are many amazing teachers out there, but there are also many not great teachers out there. Through my experience as a teacher, I have had a lot of comments and feedback from parents and students. In short, these comments usually state that I am compassionate about students progress, I am an understanding teacher who talks on the same level as my students rather than talking down to them, and I take the time to fill in knowledge gaps unlike teachers who assume their students already know the information.
