About Lisa

Stuyvesant High School Senior | Regents: Algebra I – 100 | Living Environment – 97 | ELA – 96

Hi, I’m Lisa! I’m a senior at Stuyvesant High School and a current student in the New York City public school system. Having gone through the same classes, exams, and challenges that many students face today, I understand that sometimes the hardest part of learning isn’t the material itself, but finding someone who can explain it in a way that makes sense to you.

For the past 8 years, I’ve regularly helped a family friend my age who has a learning disability with schoolwork, along with tutoring and helping other students in my building. I found that explaining a concept to others forces me to understand it more clearly and find different ways to communicate it, enhancing my own learning as well.

After years of helping people informally, I wanted to take that experience a step further and become an official tutor. What I have noticed through my past experience is that while many teachers tell their students how to answer a question, they fail to explain its fundamental concepts. When faced with an unfamiliar problem on a test, students struggle to recall and apply the skills they learned in school. My goal is to make students feel comfortable asking questions, build their confidence, and help them genuinely understand the material, not just memorize it for a test.

About the lesson

As your tutor, my job isn’t just to help you get accepted into your dream high school, but to also make sure you succeed there. As a current student, I understand exactly what today's exams demand and the specific knowledge needed to ace them. I have experience helping students with varying aptitudes and have practice adapting my pacing to meet their individual needs. Skip the expensive cram schools and obsolete textbooks, and instead opt for customized 1-on-1 learning with someone who shared your goals and achieved them.

Lessons I offer:
- SHSAT prep: algebra, geometry, data analysis, reading comprehension, grammar
- Regents prep: Algebra I, Living Environment, English Language Arts
- Homework & Essay Help

Lesson Structure:
- Consultations are done via messaging so I can evaluate your goals and prep for your needs without wasting any class time.
- Socratic Questioning: Rather than showing you how to find the answer, I ask questions that invite you to solve a problem on your own. This method allows you to understand the underlying concept a problem is based upon. This way, you won't only learn how to solve a specific problem, but also how to cross-apply the same strategy to solve similar problems on the day of the real test. It also provides me insight into your unique problem-solving process, so that I can correct any misconceptions you have and fill any gaps in your knowledge that your teachers missed.

What I require from you:
- Honesty about your level of comprehension.
- Willingness to review and practice outside of lessons to internalize new topics.
