About Michael
I am Michael Stark, an American educator from San Diego, California, with more than 25 years of experience teaching English and providing academic support to children, teenagers, and adults.
I hold a B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Riverside, and a 150-hour TESOL certificate from Arizona State University. My professional background includes ten years as a juvenile justice court counselor and five years as a counselor and teacher at Ivy American School in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
Through Michael’s Original Student Tutoring (MOST), I provide carefully prepared, personalized online instruction. Students can expect patience, clear explanations, constructive feedback, and consistent expectations. Parents can expect thoughtful communication about their child’s progress.
Having lived in Asia for more than 25 years, I understand many of the challenges involved in learning and studying in another language. My goal is to help each student develop lasting skills, greater confidence, and the ability to learn independently.

My teaching begins with understanding how each student learns, what they already know, and where they need support. I use clear explanations, guided practice, discussion, and questions that encourage students to explain their thinking. For developing readers, I connect phonics and vocabulary with comprehension. For more advanced learners, I emphasize analysis, organized writing, and confident communication.
A typical lesson begins with a brief review of previous learning and assignments. We then introduce or develop a skill, practice it together, and apply it through reading, writing, discussion, or problem solving. We finish by reviewing progress and setting meaningful practice for the next lesson.
What sets my tutoring apart is more than 25 years of teaching experience, a background in psychology and counseling, and individually prepared assignments. I adapt instruction to the learner’s needs and interests while maintaining clear expectations.
My online lessons serve children, teenagers, and adults, including English language learners and native English speakers. Areas include literacy, academic English, U.S. curriculum support, selected AP subjects, speech, and debate.
