About Florence

Hi, I’m Florence. I’m 29 and studied at the University of Cambridge. I’ve always enjoyed teaching, and before tutoring independently I spent six years teaching English and Maths at Kumon, working with students of different ages and abilities.

What I enjoy most about tutoring is seeing a student’s progress over time — particularly when something that once seemed difficult starts to make sense and they become more confident in themselves. I find that genuinely rewarding, which is why I’ve continued teaching alongside my own studies and work.

My experience at Kumon taught me to be patient and attentive to how each student learns. I don’t believe in simply going through a syllabus and moving on; I like to identify where a student is struggling, understand why, and spend time building that particular area until they feel confident with it.

I also really enjoy helping students with university applications, particularly for Architecture. Having studied at Cambridge myself, I understand how competitive the application process can be and how much preparation goes into it. I’m happy to help with everything from essays and written applications to portfolios and interview preparation, while making sure that the student’s own ideas and personality come through.

I’m friendly, approachable and take my tutoring seriously. My aim is for students to feel that they are making genuine progress, while also enjoying their lessons and becoming more confident in their own abilities.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is fairly simple: work out what a student understands, identify where they are getting stuck, and work from there. I like to focus on the specific areas that are holding someone back rather than going over things they already know.

For English and Maths up to GCSE, I usually spend the first part of a lesson working through questions or examples with the student, so I can see how they are approaching the problem. From there, we can target any gaps in their understanding, practise them together and gradually work towards doing things independently. I also put a lot of emphasis on explaining why something works, rather than just learning a method to get the right answer.

For architecture university applications, I offer support with written applications, essays, portfolios and interview preparation. I can give honest, detailed feedback on work and help students develop and communicate their ideas more clearly, while keeping the application personal to them. I can also help with preparing for architecture interviews, including Cambridge-style interviews where students may be asked to discuss their work, interests and ways of thinking.

Lessons are usually one hour, although I’m happy to adapt this depending on what the student needs.

I tutor GCSE-level English and Maths, as well as sixth-form/college students applying to architecture courses at Cambridge and other universities. I’m happy to work with students who are struggling with particular topics, as well as those who are aiming for higher grades and want to push their understanding further.

I try to keep lessons relaxed and encouraging, but also focused. The aim is for students to leave a lesson understanding something that they didn’t understand before, and feeling more confident tackling it on their own.
