About Simon

Having worked in marketing for 25 years, I had become disillusioned and exhausted by the industry. I needed to make some dramatic changes in my life.
A driver in every marketing role I had, was the opportunity it gave me to exercise my belief in the individual. As I became more senior, I was able to nurture and develop the unique strengths of those around me. I studied EQ and active listening and have been a mentor and trainer. I take pleasure knowing I may have affected many people's life journeys in ways they may not even recall.
And this is what brought me to tutoring. To help others grow. To discover their own potential. To share knowledge, ideas, and questions. To get things wrong as well as right. To make a ripple of difference in oceans of lives.

About the lesson

Following a 25-year career in marketing, I began tutoring pupils forced to home school during lockdown in 2020. Through parents’ recommendations, I took on more students and, as lockdown eased, lessons were held in-person as well as online.
In 2023, I began volunteering with Action Tutoring, a charity focussed on tackling the attainment gap. I was proud to have been awarded Volunteer Tutor of the Year 2023/24 by the charity.
My students tend to be at pivotal moments in their education journey: Year 7, when changing schools, and Years 10 & 11, when approaching GCSEs.
It's during these times that school lessons start jumping ahead from new topic to new topic. They assume pupils will retain previous knowledge and have little time to revisit topics that may still be a struggle.
This is where tuition can provide the support schools cannot. By improving core skills, we help build confidence and ensure the foundations for success are firmly in place. A good tutor should be providing knowledge that will help not just to pass exams, but to live life.
My lessons last an hour and follow a programme I have developed around the DofE's Assessment Objectives. My approach is informal, and I encourage a sense of shared investment in the time being spent together. As I get to know each student, I start to adapt the method, pace and order of lessons to best fit the need and style of the individual. It has the structure important to learning and the personalisation vital for engagement.
