About Giles
I graduated from Bennington College where I served as the Student Head of the Literature Department, but my true "master’s degree" in language came from the professional world. For 17 years, I served as the Proofreading Lead for a high-stakes financial printer, managing the technical accuracy of critical documents where a single error was not an option.
This unique background allows me to offer students a rare combination of creative insight and rigorous, professional-grade precision. I don't just teach you how to write for a grade; I teach you how to master the mechanics and the "voice" of your prose so that your work is as clear, accurate, and persuasive as possible. Whether we are deconstructing a classic novel or polishing a university application, I bring a veteran editor’s eye to every session.

My Teaching Approach: The Editor’s Lens
My method is built on the philosophy that great writing is a craft of technical precision and creative courage. Having spent 17 years as a Proofreading Lead for a financial printer, I bring a "zero-error" professional standard to the table. I teach students to see their work not just as a school assignment, but as a professional document. We focus on the "why" behind grammar and the "how" of structural logic, ensuring that every sentence serves a specific purpose.
A Typical Lesson Plan
Each 60-minute session is split into three focused phases:
The Diagnostic (10 mins): We review current work or a specific prompt to identify "friction points"—where the clarity is breaking down.
The Workshop (30 mins): Using professional editorial techniques, we deconstruct the text. I don't just fix errors; I teach you to spot the patterns of "financial-grade" precision in your own prose.
The Narrative Build (20 mins): Drawing on my Literature Department leadership experience, we move from the technical to the conceptual, ensuring your "voice" is as strong as your grammar.
What Sets Me Apart
I offer a perspective that few tutors can: the bridge between academic excellence (Bennington Literature) and corporate accountability. I know exactly how a misplaced comma or a weak argument can impact a high-stakes financial document. I bring that 17-year veteran’s eye to your student’s work, teaching them the meticulous habits that lead to top-tier grades and professional success.
Who These Lessons Are For
I specialize in working with:
High School Students (AP English/IB): Mastering complex literary analysis and the technical mechanics of the essay.
College/University Students: Drafting and refining senior theses, capstone projects, or literature degree coursework.
Graduate Applicants: Polishing personal statements and writing samples to a professional, "lead-editor" standard.
Professionals: Improving business communication and technical writing clarity.
