About Charlie
My name is Charlie Tones, 16 years old at present, and I am studying Maths, Further Maths, Physics, and Chemistry at Farnborough Sixth Form College. I hope to use these A Levels to earn a place at Cambridge University to study Physics, ideally even achieving a PhD in a field such as Quantum, Particle, or Astrophysics. I like to think I have a great sense of humour, and that I am capable of working with anyone. I am young and have unconventional teaching methods, which makes me more relatable than someone older who may have also become inflexible with their approach to teaching. I promise that I will never place unnecessary pressure on a student, but I promise - equally - that I will not allow complacency or a lack of work ethic.

My qualifications: Edexcel Mathematics - 9 AQA Higher Biology, Physics, Chemistry - 9, 9, 9 Edexcel Level 3 Award in Algebra A month's worth of volunteering as a teaching assistant My approach to tutoring: The most important questions in Science are 'How?' and 'Why?'. Secondary schools rarely take the time to answer them, usually settling for nothing more than the 'What?' of the problem, which is far from sufficient stimulation of a growing brain. I show my tutees the 'How?' with pen and paper diagrams and interactions with required GCSE formulae. This makes the application of knowledge, in Geometry and Biology, far more intuitive than just being told. Furthermore, open-ended questioning with 'Why?' is encouraged through relation of explanations to more than just one context. This eases the understanding of more conceptual ideas in Algebra, Physics, and Chemistry. These subjects can be an unnecessary headache for a learner when not given this level of guidance. This teaching is supported by a sense of humour and a relaxed environment that aids in the enjoyment of learning rather than the solemn, sterile secondary school classroom. Help - if stuck - will immediately be given in a way that is responsive to the individual and works for them in particular; a far cry from the simple blanket explanations that must be used in classes of 30. Lessons usually last an hour and I am happy to provide more than one in an evening: an hour of maths and an hour of physics, or two hours of chemistry, etc. I prefer to work with students in Year 9+, since they are more likely to have a higher degree of initial understanding which makes the entire process a little smoother for both myself and the tutee.
