About Gabriel

My name is Gabriel, and I’m an English teacher in Madrid. I got a degree in history from the University of Edinburgh in 2017, and then worked in various pubs in the UK for several years. After that I obtained my CELTA qualification, and moved to Colombia, where I gave private English classes to students of all ages and abilities. I love to travel, and I love learning Spanish, which I think informs my teaching approach. It gives me an understanding of the problems students encounter, as well as ways to overcome these problems. It also means that I can express concepts in Spanish to my students, so don’t worry if you are an absolute beginner, we will always be able to communicate!

About the lesson

In my classes, speaking always comes first. I try to keep my classes as conversational as I can, and this is for two reasons. First, I think that it’s by far the most effective way to build confidence in a language, because we spend far more time speaking to each other in day-to-day life than we do reading or writing.

The second reason I do this is that it’s more fun. Everyone remembers language classes at school where they were forced to memorise endless declinations and lists of vocabulary for weekly tests. It’s what put me off learning languages for years, and I’m very happy that this is no longer the way that we do things. I think that if you relax, don’t worry about making mistakes, and just talk about interesting topics, then you will be able to build fluency and become comfortable speaking English in no time at all!
