About Patrick

I have a 1st class degree and a Masters from Cambridge in Materials Science, now tutoring to support my training as a therapist. I was always very interested in self development as a student, mastering my learning process to achieve 6 A* A-levels and eventually work my way up to be ranked 1st in my chosen specialty at Cambridge in undergrad before I worked out that being a research scientist wasn't for me.

My start in teaching came when I was 13, when I began volunteering with a charity teaching children with learning difficulties how to swim. I loved the process of meeting children where they were, working out exactly what their needs were and communicating in just the right way for them to see improvements in themselves. Over 5 years I honed my style as a coach, found more work, got qualified, and worked with ages 4-21 with and without learning difficulties. As I moved into A-level and beyond, I began to apply those skills to help students academically as well, from SEN literacy support to Cambridge admission and university tutoring. I've helped students achieve as high as 3 grades above their predicted grades, and I've helped students gain access to first choice schools, colleges and universities.

My motivation runs deeper than exam success. I’m taking my reverence for developing people's internal processes and turning it into a career as a therapist. Tutoring is the perfect work to support me as I train. I get to see behind the curtain of how individual students learn and grow. I get to discover students' strengths, weaknesses, interests, potential, and form exercises and explanations tailored just for them. I get to see a student as a whole and help them work to achieve their maximum potential.

About the lesson

Using my specialist skills as I train, I assess the individual needs of every student to create a highly personalised learning plan. I'm particularly good with the emotional processes behind motivation, confidence and exam mindset, developing the internal skills and feedback I used to achieve my top level results. My favourite thing is seeing that moment when a student's eyes light up when they finally get something or they feel enthusiastic about a subject.

My style is heavily influenced by my coaching background. Rather than try to dazzle a student with PowerPoints I've made, I put them in the driver seat, helping them get a sense of what it's like to DO the subject, not just listen to it, and so gain a deeper understanding. I'm skills based, and I like to guide them through a problem with successive questions rather than just feed them information. My lessons are very active. My lively, enthusiastic style is engaging and fosters good relationships with students.
