About Liam
I am passionate about maths and about helping others to understand it, learn how to use it and see how it relates to real world problems.
Other than some experience of giving tuition at school (2 hour sessions at the weekends enabled one neighbour's son who had been having difficulties at school get notably good maths results, helping him into a career in banking) and undergraduate levels (my students all did fine, but I wouldn't claim any special credit!), most of my career has involved applying maths for practical real world problems, through the use of computer models (at BRE Ltd.) and AI, including developing new mathematical models and explaining these to others.
I am returning to tuition looking for the satisfaction that comes from improving understanding by showing maths is fun and relevant, and thereby building confidence and enabling success for students.

The student's unique objectives and needs (plus, of course, the relevant curriculum) guide my design of a tailored program of tuition, based on manageable modules each of which develops and improves the relevant capabilities in a progressive manner. I see teaching maths as being more about enabling a student to have insight than just presenting techniques to be learnt. Developing a student's ability to understand and reason independently is paramount - so they feel they own skills rather than merely using them. I see positive feedback for small achievements as key to building the confidence and enthusiasm that enables larger success. I use vivid, interactive presentations because these are engaging and memorable for the student and thus more effective. I also like to relate mathematics to things in the real world that the student understands and has interest in, to help build the intuition which is key to the subject.
