About Miriam

I am a tutor with extensive experience in education and academia in both my specialisation of Chemistry as well as in adjacent fields such as Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Biology, Biochemistry, Environmental Sciences, Chemical Engineering and Physics. I completed my undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, followed by my integrated Master's Degree in Chemistry. I undertook a project in the Webster group with my main focus being around Organic, Biological and Inorganic Chemistry. After graduating I worked as a Teacher of Chemistry at Notting Hill and Ealing High School in West London for a year, where I taught the age range of 12-18 and took on additional roles in my department covering extracurricular work in Sciences, for example preparing for competitions, Olympiads, and university admissions exams and interviews. In this September I will begin a PhD course under the IGNITE DTP programme at the National Oceanography Centre associated with the University of Southampton, where I will be applying my Chemistry background to the investigation of toxic effects of mixtures of metals on deep sea fauna as a result of deep sea mining.

I have been a tutor since 2022, and have done voluntary tutoring before that since I was 16. I have tutored for GCSEs in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Geography and more. I have tutored for A-level and IB covering Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Chemistry. I have extensive experience preparing students for application to university, including the most competitive British Universities. Over half of those I have tutored for Oxford or Cambridge have been successful in receiving an offer. I carry out extensive and rigorous work around personal statements, entrance exams and interview preparation.

I tend to end up working seasonally, doing mainly University preparation sessions from June to December, and exam preparation from December to June, but can take on any work at any time of year so long as I have availability.

About the lesson

I have been a tutor since 2022 and have done voluntary work around teaching tutoring for longer still, and have experience working as a teacher and as extra academic support in a secondary school in London. I have worked with ages 12-20, all abilities, and students without English as a first language. My lessons are for anyone in this age range seeking support with university admissions, A-levels, GCSEs, or general support to bolster studies in schools or to help push the boundaries for a very curious student.
My philosophy stems around building personalised knowledge frameworks for students in order to be able to sufficiently problem solve in Sciences, or to have an outlet to exhibit a genuine interest in the subject. I do not believe that rote learning is the most effective or even the most simple method to achieving desired results; our sessions will be an ongoing academic discussion where we find what works best for you. A lesson will typically be between 45 and 90 minutes depending on the students needs.
