About Carina
I’m a university graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Political Science, offering English tutoring for students from kindergarten through grade 12. I bring a strong academic background, experience with AP and IB programs, and a clear, supportive teaching style focused on real progress. In my career, I’ve worked in big law, financial technology, and technology strategy - fields that demand excellent writing, critical thinking, and communication. These skills directly inform how I help students improve their reading comprehension, grammar, essay writing, and overall literacy. My Approach as a Tutor:
As an English tutor, my goal is to help students of all ages build strong foundational skills in reading, writing, grammar, and literacy. Clear and Step-by-Step Instruction: I break down complex concepts into manageable steps, ensuring students understand each part before moving on to more challenging material.
Active Practice: I make sure students practice what they’ve learned during each lesson, whether it’s writing exercises, reading passages, or grammar drills. Active participation helps solidify new skills.
Support and Encouragement: I focus on building confidence by celebrating small successes and offering constructive feedback. I want students to feel empowered in their learning journey.
Typical Lesson Plan:
Check-in (5-10 minutes): I start by discussing what the student is currently working on and review any challenges they’ve encountered since our last session.
Concept Introduction (15-20 minutes): Depending on the focus of the lesson (e.g., reading comprehension, grammar, writing), I will introduce or review the concept and model how to apply it.
Guided Practice (15-20 minutes): I’ll have the student try exercises related to the topic, offering guidance when needed, and encouraging them to ask questions as they go.
Review & Feedback (5-10 minutes): At the end of each session, I review the student's work, provide feedback, and discuss any areas to focus on for next time.
