About Justin
I'm a certified BC teacher with a Bachelor of Education and more than twenty years in high school classrooms. In that time I've taught somewhere north of four thousand students — mostly math, plus science, from Grade 8 upward.
A lot of those years also went into building courses and materials rather than just delivering them, which turns out to be a different skill and one I've come to enjoy more than I expected. It's why I don't teach out of a textbook. I write my own notes, practice and assessments, because I want them built around where students actually get stuck rather than where a publisher assumed they would.
Teaching one student at a time is, honestly, the part of this job I like best. In a class of thirty you can watch a student go quiet and not always have the ten minutes it would take to find out why. Sitting with one student, you do. And most of the time the problem turns out to be smaller and more specific than anyone feared — watching someone work out that they were never bad at math, they just had one shaky thing underneath, doesn't get old.
I'm based in Kelowna and teach both in person and online. I'm patient, I don't rush, and I'll tell you honestly what I think is going on — including when I think a student needs less tutoring than you were expecting, or a different sort of help than I offer.

Who these lessons are for
Grade 8 to 12 math — Foundations of Math and Pre-Calculus 10, Foundations 11, Pre-Calculus 11 and 12. Grade 10 and 11 are where I'm strongest, and I'd rather tell you that than pretend to be equally good at everything. Most of my students are somewhere between "was doing fine until this year" and "has quietly not understood much since Grade 9." Both are fixable — they just need different starting points. In person in Kelowna, or online anywhere in Canada.
How I teach
I taught high school math and science for more than twenty years, and I write my own course materials: lesson notes, practice sets with worked answers, quizzes, unit tests, and an answer key for every page. That matters more than it sounds. It means I'm not improvising around whatever homework happens to turn up. I can teach the actual course, in order, and a student can see where they are in it.
A session runs the same shape every time. Ten minutes on what went wrong in last week's practice. Then the new idea taught properly — I work examples first, then the student works examples while I watch and catch the errors as they happen, rather than finding them a week later. Then a short set of practice to take away, with the answers included so it can be marked at home. Homework that can't be self-marked teaches nothing.
I start every new student with a twelve-minute diagnostic, because in my experience the thing going wrong in Grade 11 is almost never Grade 11. It's usually negative signs, fractions, or basic algebra — and until one of those is repaired, everything built on top keeps collapsing. Finding out which one it is takes twelve minutes and saves months.
What I'm not
I'm not a homework service. If what you need is tonight's assignment finished, I'm the wrong person and I'll tell you so. What I do is teach a student the course properly, so that next term's assignments aren't a crisis.
The first twenty minutes are free, and they're a conversation rather than a lesson — I'll ask what your child is working on and where it's going wrong, and tell you honestly whether I'm the right fit.
