About Laura

Hello! I'm a Musical Theatre graduate and actor who currently teaches Singing and Drama at different schools around London as well as tutoring Acting, Clarinet and Singing. I love teaching my favourite subjects to people who are looking for a fun, dynamic and pressure-free learning experience. I'm a certified vocal coach with Functional Voice Training but I have also trained in singing using other techniques, including Estill Voice Training. I love learning about and playing with the voice, that's why my final dissertation for my MT degree was about training the voice and exploring its limits with fun exercises. I graduated from the ESAD of Murcia (Spain) with a BA in Acting for Musical Theatre before furthering my studies at The MTA (London), earning a diploma in Musical Theatre in 2019. I've been working as a professional singer/actor/musician since then.

I have taught students from 3 to over 50 years old, so I adapt my lessons and methodology to the person as much as possible. Individual classes require an open mind and figuring out how to work with each other so we both get the best experience. Every student might need a different approach to the subject, so I'm always open to shake things up a bit and try to find the best way to reach the student's goals. I try including games, playfulness (and sometimes even a little bit of silliness) in every subject I teach, since I firmly believe it's the key to learning, discovering and developing your skills. I myself also keep in constant vocal training. I believe that's the best way to keep gaining tools and exercises to help my students reach their goals. I can assure you results from our first lesson, since we work with understanding our instrument and experiencing exercises instead of just following other more old-school methods that aren't necessarily based on understanding the science and anatomy of the voice.

Find out more about Laura

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I started playing the clarinet when I was 6 years old and I started singing in a choir when I was 8. I fell in love with singing and making music with other people immediately!
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I could probably listen to Musical Theatre tunes all day every day, but out of that genre, the artists I keep coming back to lately are Taylor Swift and Brandi Carlile.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a singing student.

I think a vocal anatomy and functionality course, which is not "difficult" but I do find it riveting. A process to learn about your voice and how it works, unlearning patterns that aren't helping and learning new ones, it's tricky and it takes a lot of focus, but it's incredibly helpful.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Ooh that's a difficult question! I'd say probably the violin because it requires so much precision with finger positions.
  • What are your keys to success?

Perseverance, playfulness, being open-minded and willing to keep trying new things and making mistakes and growing and learning.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Brandi Carlile and Lin Manuel Miranda for tips about songwriting, putting yourself out there without fear and trusting your choices.
I would have loved to talk with Aretha Franklin about soul and feeling in singing, she certainly knew what she was doing.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I remember being asked to learn a patter song overnight for a challenge at drama school. It really helped me realise how much you can learn if you push yourself in case of emergency, which, to be fair, happens sometimes when you're auditioning, so it was a very valuable lesson!
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I constantly continue studying and expanding my knowledge in teaching and vocal coaching. I love learning about the voice and the brain and how it all connects with the rest of the body, how to make everything as functional and sustainable as possible to support long careers. And, most of all, I try to do this in a relaxed, dynamic and fun way, because I believe it's the only way to positively improve and change: without pressure, without a fear of making mistakes, trying new things.
