About Stephen
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been a private tutor since 2013. In the past I was Chief Examiner in A level Biology. I currently set and mark A level Biology exams and am also an examiner for A level Chemistry International A level Chemistry. I am lead co-author on several level 3 textbooks and author of GCSE Biology workbooks and A level Chemistry revision apps.

No.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a Chartered Chemist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (CChem, FRSC).
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I have several students who hope to study medicine or veterinary medicine, so need to be sure of getting A or A* grades. Others need help because they have missed parts of the course, either through illness or through having had a succession of supply teachers and staff changes. In the past I have had students who have struggled to make the transition from GCSE to A level and have needed a lot of help and support - not just with the subject matter, but also in developing self-confidence.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Chemistry and Biology (A level and GCSE).
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BA (Oxon) in Biochemistry and a PhD in Peptide Chemistry; I am a Chartered Chemist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (CChem, FRSC)
- How much do you charge?
I charge £55 per hour for one-to-one lessons. I charge £30 each for groups of 2 and £25 each for groups of 3 or more.
- Where do you teach?
Since COVID-19 I teach only online via Zoom.
- When are you available?
I work from home, so I am available for teaching weekdays in the daytime. Weekday evenings are busier, and I sometimes have availability on Saturday mornings. I live 2 minutes' walk from Toot Hill School, making it possible for College students to come for lessons during free periods.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
GCSE (year 10 and 11) and A level.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
GCSE and IGCSE (AQA, Edexcel and OCR) and A / AS level (AQA, Edexcel and OCR).
- Do you have a personal message for students?
It is not always possible for a classroom teacher to explain things in a way that everyone understands. I am good at explaining difficult topics in an approachable way. I also believe that Chemistry and Biology are fascinating subjects and learning them should be fun and absorbing, so I make my lessons as relaxed and varied as possible. At the same time, exams require rigorous thinking and expression so I like to ensure that students not only understand the subject matter, but are able to express themselves in a way that will maximise their potential.
