About Hannah

When I was studying GCSE science I was never made aware of the real life applications each subject had which led to a lack of interest and inspiration of the sciences. Since studying Chemistry and Biology further at A level, my mind opened up to how important the uses of each subject was in everyday life, which led me to taking an undergraduate degree in Chemistry. My goal as a tutor is to inspire you with real life uses of each subject as I know that without genuine interest in a subject it is difficult to stay engaged.

From my previous two years tutoring experience I have noticed that lack of confidence seriously affects the abilities of students. I take the approach that you should have a go at everything without the worrying that you may answer wrong. After a few weeks of this technique I have noticed not only a significant increase in confidence for students, but also a increase in obtaining the right answers.

I also think it is vital to obtain a proper understanding instead of just learning formula's for answers. Although formulaic learning appears to be the easiest, I find it very limiting when it comes to not only exam questions but also having a firm grasp of the subject. This is also great if you hate remembering a lot of content, as having a good understanding of a subject allows you to not have to remember everything!

About the lesson

Building confidence in each subject is my main priority as a tutor. It is important that students feel comfortable and not intimidated by science at GCSE and A level.

The first session includes breaking down what each student understands and what area of the subject they are struggling in, wether that be exam technique, time pressure, general understanding, etc. From then on each lesson is tailored to the student's specific needs. A typical session consists of content covering with a small quiz at the end of each session. The following lesson then starts on a small quiz to recap the previous sessions content. When understanding and confidence is deemed appropriate exam practise and drill questions are then used.

A standard lesson lasts for an hour, but longer lessons may be considered. As a graduate Chemist and a current masters student in Chemical Engineering with 2 years of online tutoring experience I am confident that I am well equipped to provide a high quality tutoring service.
