About Will

I'm Will and I have a master's in chemistry from Durham University. I love inspiring students of all ages and levels to love chemistry, maths, and science in general as much as I do. I love chemistry because it encompasses so many exciting scientific concepts and helps to explain the physical world we live in at a small scale, something that I find fascinating. I love maths because of the satisfaction one gets from solving a difficult problem, I also think it is a vital tool for life and is bound to come in handy whichever career path you choose. Above all else, I enjoy tutoring and helping people to learn new things, primarily because I love learning new things. I want to show you that learning about science really isn't as scary as you might think.

About the lesson

I have over 2000 hours of online tutoring experience, helping in excess of 100 students ranging from age 11-30. I tutor chemistry and maths up to A-Level and physics at GCSE level. My sessions are normally 1 hour long, I like to divide them up into approximately 20 minutes of work followed by 40 minutes of past exam questions, this varies by student but I have found this is the best way to develop a student's skills. It also means that the lessons are interactive, and the student can get involved. I believe that a problem-based approach is vital when it comes to learning, being able to problem solve is a key skill that you must have going into an exam, and into the world of work. I like using drawings and diagrams in my tutoring, most of my teaching consists of writing/drawing on a virtual whiteboard using my graphics tablet. I find this keeps students engaged. Additionally, I like giving the student context by putting content into a real-life setting and discussing the practical applications of what they are learning. I feel that having this perspective really gives the students an appreciation for what they are doing and inspires them to learn. I tailor my tutoring to suit the needs of the individual student as everyone learns differently. I also like thinking about the long-term plan for the student to ensure that they are on track to achieve their desired grades. I wouldn't normally set homework but sometimes it is useful for the student to go over some questions which we can then discuss in the next lesson.
