About Tania

Hi, I'm Tania! I've been tutoring English/Writing for six years, starting at Foothill College, where I tutored General Education English. I am currently a mentor at Girls Write Now (and former mentee). Outside of speaking work, I tutor and mentor students of different ages. I'm also a substitute teacher and have worked as a classroom aide.

I have a Communication degree from UNLV, where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0. I wrote and delivered an original TEDx talk, refined through more than 60 rehearsals, then performed it live for a real audience and recorded it on camera, under pressure (and a time limit!).

I've spent almost 20 years in theater, including improv, where the whole job is staying calm and adjusting when something doesn't go as planned. That's the same skill public speaking actually runs on, and it's why I don't teach from a script. I teach from what I've had to figure out myself on the fly.

I take this seriously, because I've been both the student terrified that their voice doesn't matter, and a mentor who knows that you are not in competition with anybody, and YOU are the only one that can tell your story. Sometimes, all you need is a person to be in your corner. You got this.

About the lesson

I match to the learner. First session, I'm figuring out how you actually take in information, then we run with it. Visual learner? We're watching a clip. Hands-on? We're doing examples. I'm not reading off a slide full of walls of text at you if that's not how your brain works, because a session that doesn't work for YOU doesn't work. Period.

I'll usually have you take a quick learning styles quiz early on too, just makes it faster for me to figure out how to actually reach you instead of guessing. And if you're a visual learner, or you just like real examples, I'm going to ask what your favorite movies or shows are so I can tie the material to something you already know. Captain America and Iron Man have gotten more students through essay structure than I can count at this point. Not to brag, but every single student I've tutored has passed their classes.

I've been acting since I was eight and gave a TEDx talk, so helping people find their voice, on the page and out loud, is kind of my whole thing. My college professors handpicked and trained me to tutor peer writing, specifically with visual learners, so I had to get creative fast. I also spent the last year doing RTI reading intervention with Kindergarteners. All of them passed and moved to first grade. I will be bragging about that forever.

Sessions are a safe space. Nobody's getting judged here for a wrong answer or not knowing something yet. I will hype you up. Genuinely. Embarrassingly. While also doing real, solid work with you. My whole job is to eventually make sure you don't need me anymore, that you've got your own "I can do this" going.

This is for anyone working on English, reading, essay writing, oral expression, or creative writing, any age, any way you learn. If nobody's told you yet that you can do this, that's exactly what I'm here for.
