About Ilya

I am a software product manager, offering maths lessons to help improve the overall level of maths literacy and help talented kids (and adults) reach their full potential and not be afraid of tough maths problems. I have been tutoring maths, physics, and chemistry privately and in small groups for 8 years now (started in High School). My students range from middle school to community college to university students. My most recent student achieved an 8/9 on their GCSE Maths exam after missing 2 years of school and making up the entire curriculum in 9 months. I have also helped 3 students improve their grades from 40% to 85% and helped a few students achieve the highest mark on the IB maths exam. I have a bachelor's degree in maths and neuroscience, have been a winner of numerous maths and physics competitions, and have published a paper on computational neuroscience.

About the lesson

My methodology depends on the kind of student I'm working with. When working with students, who are underachieving in their classes, I focus on eliminating gaps in their foundational knowledge (which in my experience causes about 80% of underperformance in maths). When working with students who want to know more and achieve higher results in competitions, I go through a special curriculum of advanced and olympiad topics in maths, as it is taught in the top maths schools in Russia and the US. Students who thoroughly study and become comfortable with these topics and problems tend to perform extremely well in all maths competitions including IMO and feel much more comfortable with mathematics in university. I have a collection of maths problems for all topics and levels, which I have personally picked from rare books or written myself, so students cannot find easy solutions online. I normally go through practice problems with students and then leave 10-20 problems of weekly homework for the student to work through on their own.
