About Jacob Alan

My name is Jacob Alan Smith, and I am a composer, audio technician, and educator currently teaching as an Adjunct Professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro's esteemed Kotis School of Music. I hold a Bachelor's in Music Composition and Technology from Virginia Tech, and a Master's in Music Composition from UNC Greensboro. I bring a wealth of experience in music theory, composition, and technology to my teaching, from the perspective of a young musician working on an international stage. I am a member and co-founder of the collaborative composition duo Ivory Out of Time, and a senior member of 404rkistra (formerly L2Ork), a laptop orchestra that is redefining electronic music composition through remote, synchronous collaborative performance. I have presented work at numerous conferences and institutions across the world, including at the Vienna Contemporary Composers Festival, SEAMUS, ICMC, and NIME. As a coach, I have helped individual students as well as full ensembles/bands hone their musical abilities and achieve their personal goals. Whether you're looking to learn piano, refine your composition skills, or navigate the intricacies of music technology, I'm here to guide you every step of the way.

About the lesson

Things I teach:
> Music composition, orchestration, engraving, and editing.
> Music technology, audio engineering, recording, producing, and songwriting.
> Piano, from beginners to higher-level students.
> Reading sheet music.
> Improvisation.

My teaching method revolves around the student bringing me whatever it is they are working on (be it a piece that they're learning, a piece that they're writing, or something that they want to learn more about) and we look into it together to see how the student can further hone their craft or use that material to further it. I always focus on what the student's goals are and what they'd like to learn, and then we build a lesson plan from there. My lesson plans are highly individualized no matter what the student chooses to pursue.

My lessons are for everyone of any skill level, be it a beginner just learning their way around the wonderful world of music to an established musician looking to further their craft or learn a new skill. I have previous experience teaching virtually all skill levels, all the way up to graduate students in music.

I offer 30 minute, 45 minute, and 1 hour lessons.
