About Marie
Hi! I’m Marie, an English tutor from Chicago, USA living in Japan!
I have over 10 years of translation experience and recent experience teaching Japanese adult learners.
I worked as a corporate translator and interpreter for 4 years, which gave me a strong understanding of English, Japanese, and cross-cultural communication.
I’m currently studying for my TESOL degree and have an educational background in Human Services, which has helped me develop a patient, supportive, and student-centered approach to teaching.
I use visual materials, pronunciation practice, and plenty of speaking opportunities to help students build confidence.
Whether you are a beginner learning English for the first time or an intermediate student looking to improve your conversation skills, I will create a comfortable and encouraging environment where you can learn at your own pace and feel proud of your progress.

I use pictures, PowerPoint slides, repetition, pronunciation practice, and conversation activities to make learning easy and fun!
A typical lesson starts with reviewing and conversation, followed by speaking and repetition practice, and then a conversation activity where you can use what you learned.
I try to have my students come up with topics they want to study, which helps them be more motivated.
I mainly teach Japanese students from beginner to intermediate levels (A1–B1) and for those who want to improve everyday English, travel English, pronunciation, or speaking confidence.
What makes me different is my experience as both an English tutor and a professional corporate translator and interpreter, as well as my 10+ years of experience tutoring English to Japanese children. I’m also currently studying for my TESOL degree, and my Human Services background helps me bring patience, empathy, and understanding to every lesson.
