About Rowen

I'm a writer, singer-songwriter and actress with BBC 6 Music airplay, film and TV work (screened at BFI / Cannes Indie Shorts Awards/BBC4) and a self-published book of poetry. I have also written two ongoing blogs over the last 10 years as well as starting my latest blog iteration with a new focus just recently.

I have facilitated creative writing workshops and groups in New York, Prague, Manchester, and London as well as online. I self-published and launched a book of poetry in 2017 in NYC and wrote a series of monologues for myself and others, some of which were performed at Monologue Mondays in Manchester. I have also written several short film screenplays as well as a feature film.

My teaching experience is as varied as my career, so it has included teaching singing to actors, piano and songwriting to teenagers looking to focus on self-expression in music (rather than for exams) English as a foreign language to advanced non-native speakers of English both abroad and online, classical piano, pop-music piano and singing and voice work for narration for documentary film in addition to coaching and mentoring screenwriters, poets and blog writers.

I like to tailor my sessions with students to be more focussed on a mentoring approach, whereby you tell me what you most need help with (or we discover that together) and I guide you to work that most supports what you need to make progress or simply open up your writing practice to new avenues.

Above all, creative writing of any kind should be purposeful (even if that purpose is to have fun following a thread of an idea to see where it takes you) so that you feel you are contributing something that helps offset all of the things in your life that dull your excitement and enthusiasm. Writing is a rebellion against all of the tasks, pressures and societal strain we face at whatever age we're at. It's a means of taking some autonomy over your life even within the constraints you may be facing that feel overwhelming.

Are you a writer, poet, singer-songwriter, artist with a blog (or aspiring to be any of these)?

Or perhaps you're just looking for a bit of accountability in sticking to your writing goals, or need help getting through exam work while not losing sight of your creative soul..?

I've been there. I've also taught and supported students and writers who needed that extra help and inspiration when they'd got stuck in a bit of a work-life imbalance trap.

One of the key things I've found useful for my own creative work is having someone on my side who's really invested in how I'm progressing and holds me accountable to the project ideas I've come up with. My sessions are designed to work around you and are tailored to what we decide you need most.

I charge more than casual teachers or part-time coaches because I am a full-time creative freelancer and I want to put more focus on your individual writing goals without the pressure of juggling too many students in one week in order to pay the bills. I want to put the focus on YOU and be 'in your corner' with follow-up support as and when you need it.

That's why you have the option of having a block of longer sessions with me (1hr + email/voicenote support) or a block of shorter check-ins (30mins) plus feedback on your work. After an initial free trial session I offer a pack of 6 sessions, based on what works best for you.

Typical sessions include talking through your work, having a 15 minute writing prompt+writing time live on a call to hold you accountable to having some creative time for you in your week, and/or a review of how you're structuring your time for your writing work and what style of writing you're looking to target.

I can also review or proofread your recent writing work or recommend resources to improve your work, or help you find new inspiration for next steps. I can also recommend writing resources for screenwriting, songwriting, or help with poetry and flash fiction writing.

I offer a £5 discount per session for 6 sessions booked in advance. (Superprof says 5 or 10 but I can't change this.) The block of 6 not only includes our 1-1 time on a Zoom call, but follow-on resources I send you between sessions as well as responding to any email/voicenote questions you have in between.

There's also an option of 6, 30-minute sessions if you're simply looking for writing project accountability support - we can discuss this in the free trial session.

If you prefer to book one session at a time, the rate is: £55.

24hrs' notice is required for any cancellations, otherwise the full fee is forfeited.
