About Daniel

I started flying in 2006. On my flight path, I have taught at a few different flight schools under both part 141 and 61. I have flown a variety of aircraft, mainly Cessnas, Pipers, Diamonds and Grummans. I earned my private and instrument in Leesburg, VA under the DC SFRA where I flew as a hobby. I was part of a flying club that flew volunteer flights with Air Care Alliance and Pilots and Paws. Here, I also spent several flight hours learning aerobatic maneuvers in a Decathlon.

After deciding to become a professional pilot, I moved to Nashville, TN and earned my commercial, multi, and instructor certificates at Middle Tennessee State University. After completing the 141 program and training students for MTSU I chased my girlfriend to Knoxville and began flying for a 61 school at DKX. I’m currently working on developing an online flight school that will focus on ground study by using one on one instruction with active CFIs, not just video programs.

Before flying I worked as a wilderness skills instructor with youth groups and outdoor outfitting companies. Teaching has always been something I have been passionate about. From having worked as an instructor in different fields, I have a strong understanding that teaching is a skill that needs to be learned on its own apart from the skills being taught. Teaching has always been a part of my life and as such, flight instruction is something I want to do because it is something I enjoy doing. This is not my stepping stone, it’s my career.

About
I offer ground training for any subject up to ATP. Including Part 107 Remote Pilot and ADX Dispatcher. Written test prep. Mock orals. Full lessons. Multi engine transition. Rusty pilot review. CFI applicant training and more.

Online instruction works by using a video app with a whiteboard and screen share. I have been teaching online for several years now and have found it to be just as effective as face to face. The flexibility with scheduling can even make it better sometimes.

For all subjects I work using the latest ACS, written questions and modern technology. Always with a strong focus on ADM.

Much of aviation is self-study, but this is daunting, especially for new private pilots. There are many tools available for you to learn with, one of them being to hire a CFI to guide you. I’ll be able to show you the best tools and programs that will help you at your level and explain how to properly use them.

For written test review, we can walk through the harder questions using real questions from the test. W/B, CG, Performance, VORs, Charts and whatever else you’re having trouble with. We’ll use an electric flight computer sim to teach you how to use it.

For oral review, I can teach as a CFI would explaining concepts so that you understand them and are able to answer a DPE's question about it. And/or I can give you a practice oral test. Acting as if I was a DPE on your check ride and we can see what you need to work on.

I've worked with both part 61 and 141 schools. I'm familiar with most GA planes and can help you understand your POH to be able to explain systems and emergencies to any DPE.

I will do my best to not interfere with what your CFI is teaching you and only act as a tutor.

  • 1) What age did you start playing sport? Tell us about this time or moment in your life.

Flying was my childhood dream, so I started as soon as I could figure out how to pay for it. I’ve always loved planes, I remember in grade school during recess my friend’s yelling “Mustang” as they all watched the car drive by, while I was looking up trying to spot the P-51.
  • 2) What are your favourite sports; those that you practice at a high level, a simple hobby, and a sport that you'd still like to discover?

Basic VFR, no GPS and paper charts. I love following the highways and railways to navigate. This is how I was taught in private; my old Skyhawk only had a NorthStar GPS that gave bearing and distance, if it was working. I find joy in navigating with the basics, it’s the challenge. With that being said, professionals use GPS and glass, it is safer and more proficient. So instructors need to train students with modern technology so they can better understand it, just be careful not to become over reliant on it.
  • 3) What gives you the motivation and passion to pursue your sport?

Teaching can be a drag sometimes when it gets repetitive or if the student isn’t motivated. But I’ve found that with flying most students have the same energy I put into it. Advantages of working with adults. But the best motivation I get is when I’m on a roll lecturing on a topic that my student didn’t understand. Getting to see the light bulb turn on over their head. When I’m able to truly help them understand a complex topic. Seeing their frustration disappear as they realize they can learn it.
  • 4) Do you have a sporting achievement that you're particularly proud of?

Training out of my airsickness. When I first started flying it would hit me bad. Sometimes to the point where we turned around and headed home. But with time you will get used to it and your stomach will settle. What really got me over air sickness was aerobatic training. I flew with a competitive aerobatic pilot at Potomac Field inside D.C.’s restricted airspace. Each lesson I lasted a little bit longer before telling him to take the controls and on the last flight I didn’t need the barf bag.
  • 5) How have your achievements and challenges made you a better sportsperson?

A big part of what recruiters look for in aviation is recent training events. When was the last time you got a new rating or learned a new system? Don’t stop with just the basic ratings, keep pushing to learn new skills. It keeps you proficient, not just current.
  • 6) If you had to go for a jog with a famous athlete, who would you choose? And what questions would you ask them?

If I could fly with one of the pioneers of flight it might be Amelia Earhart I’d ask her, “what happened?”
  • 7) How do you help people stay motivated?

Showing them the right tool and methods to learn. We try to learn everything ourselves now, so we forget that people have been learning to fly for quite a while. You don’t need to start at zero, use the knowledge they have gathered, then improve it.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in sports?

Experience and passion. Teaching and flying have always been part of my life, so CFI is perfect. This isn’t just a stepping stone for me, I want to teach and help students learn all they can with their ground studies. To back up this drive I have experience. I’m nearly 1,500 flight hours now, the bulk of them dual given. I’ve been working as an online ground instructor for several years and easily have thousands of hours of ground given. I’ve walked this path so many times, I’ll be happy to guide you.
