About Stephen
My name is Stephen and I have lived and taught in France for many years, but am now principally based in Oxford in the UK. I have now retired from teaching at French university, and I currently lecture in French translation at the University of Oxford. I teach to the highest levels, preparing students for Preliminary and Final examinations in the BA degree. Although I am based principally in Oxford, I spend time in France as well, so depending on circumstances and the time of year, I can offer both in-person and online teaching sessions.

I have long and varied experience of teaching in a one-to-one tutorial environment. I believe that an atmosphere of kindness, patience, and humour is essential to fostering a productive tutorial, along with a devotion to high academic achievement and optimal outcomes. My average lesson is 50 minutes to 1 hour. I like to vary activities throughout that time, and at every stage ensuring that the student has understood the exercise. According to the student's needs, one part of the tutorial will be devoted to a point of grammar, another to reading and listening comprehension, another to translating short passages. My experience as a lecturer at Oxford enables me to teach to the highest level, but I can obviously adjust the difficulty levels. I am open to teaching students at school level, college and adults of all ages wishing to brush up or perfect their French.
