About Sean
Hi! My name is Sean Tan, and I am a International Relations and History student at the London School of Economics. Before that, I was one of 14 King's (academic) Scholars at Eton College, where I was also the president of the debating society.
Over the four years I have spent debating, I have qualified for the outrounds for approximately twenty tournaments at both the university and high school level, including placing second at Penn Schools WSDC and Oxford Schools 2023, the largest tournament in the world with over 1,500 participating teams. I have also been the top speaker at LSE Seniors, come within the top ten speakers at Durham Schools, Imperial Schools, and ICYD, and a semifinalist at Doxbridge Pre-WUDC, Oxford Schools 2024, and Nusantara Open. Moreover, I have experience judging in competitions, including Cambridge Schools, London Juniors, and Windsor Juniors, and have qualified for the finals for every one I have participated in.

I have found competitive debating to not only be fulfilling in itself, but also highly useful for expressing myself for any purpose, both in writing and speech. As a former president of Eton's debating society and instructor at the Art of Debating charity foundation, I have been mentoring students of all levels for three years, helping one become the top high school speaker in Europe, two qualify for the England national debating team, and many more succeed at tournaments at the high school and university level.
My experience has taught me to prioritise the basics, with a heavy emphasis on structuring arguments to communicate a point clearly and without repetition. Lessons will consist of either going through speeches together and giving feedback, practicing speech drills together, or going through case files to learn content which can be used for future argumentation.

Sean has been my tutor for a few months now and I’ve made great progress in A Level Economics. His lessons are engaging and flexible- we explore recent relevant news topics related to economics- but the main focus is going through past paper questions and essays or on consolidating content for topics that I feel weren’t covered well in school.
Sean provides a wealth of information e.g his substack where he analyses economic events in a clear and accessible way.
He has in addition been hugely helpful in answering any economics related questions I may have as well as giving advice on essay competitions and more general personal statement advice.
