About Shelton
I'm Shelton, a dedicated English and ESL educator with five years of teaching experience across both classroom and one-on-one settings. I hold a 120-hour TEFL/TESOL certification through The TEFL Org, an internationally accredited program, and I currently work as a Special Education Paraeducator in a public school system, where I support students daily with individualized instruction.
Over the years, I've taught learners at every level — from complete beginners to advanced speakers — including international students on F-1 visas and adult domestic learners preparing for assessments like CASAS. I take a structured, patient approach to teaching: every lesson is built around your specific goals, whether that's building conversational confidence, strengthening grammar, or preparing for an exam.
I understand that trying a new tutor can feel like a leap, especially online. My teaching method and techniques
I believe language learning happens best in a low-pressure, supportive environment where students feel comfortable practicing and making mistakes. My approach is student-centered: I assess each learner's current level and goals first, then build lessons around real communication — not just grammar drills. I mix structured skill-building (reading, writing, speaking, listening) with conversational practice, and I'm big on breaking down complex concepts into manageable pieces, especially for students who feel overwhelmed by the material.
A typical lesson
A typical lesson starts with a quick check-in on what the student wants to work on that day, followed by a short review of previous material to reinforce it. From there, we move into focused practice — whether that's grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, or conversation — using real-world examples and materials tailored to the student's interests and level. I always build in speaking practice, even in lessons focused on writing or grammar, since confidence in speaking is often what students need most. We close with a quick recap and a clear takeaway or small assignment to build on for next time.

I bring five years of hands-on ESL teaching experience with both international students (many on F-1 visas) and adult domestic learners, plus a 120-hour TEFL/TESOL certification. I've helped students prepare for and improve their scores on CASAS assessments, and I currently work as a Special Education Paraeducator, which has sharpened my ability to differentiate instruction and support learners who need extra structure or patience. I know how to meet a student exactly where they are — whether that means slowing down to rebuild fundamentals or challenging a more advanced speaker to sound more natural.
