About Mahi

Namaste! I’m Mahi, a trained Kathak dancer with over a decade of learning, performing, and sharing the joy of dance. My journey with Kathak began in India, where I completed my Bachelor’s in Kathak (Sangeet Prabhakar) from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, securing First Division. I was fortunate to get my training done from one of the most prestigious institutes: Kathak Kendra (New Delhi, India) under Guru Subash Chandra, earning a diploma degree, which deepened my connection with the art form. Since 2015, I have also been a proud recipient of the CCRT scholarship by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, which supported my training and performances at various state and national-level festivals and competitions. While Kathak is my first love, I’ve also explored other styles like contemporary, belly dance, and jazz, which often bring a playful versatility to my teaching.

Why Kathak?

For me, Kathak is not just a performance art, it’s been a space for reflection, discipline, and emotional balance. The rhythm of the footwork, the stillness in expressions, the flow of movements, they’ve helped me regulate emotions, find calm during stressful times, and connect more deeply with myself. This is something I love bringing into my classes as well.

About the lesson

Whether you’re new to dance or have some experience, I focus on making sessions both technically strong and emotionally grounding. You’ll not only learn steps and movements but also discover how dance can be a mindful practice, helping with focus, confidence, and emotional expression.

1. Kathak: Kathak is more than just footwork and spins, it’s about rhythm, expression, and storytelling. In my lessons, I start with the basics of tatkaar (footwork), hand movements, and simple expressions, gradually moving into more advanced chakkars (spins), abhinaya (expression-based storytelling), and rhythmic compositions. Every session is designed to build not just technique but also discipline, focus, and emotional regulation. Kathak can be deeply grounding, helping you release stress and connect with yourself while also learning a beautiful classical art form. Whether you are a complete beginner or already trained, I adapt the lessons to your level and pace. The aim is to enjoy the process while steadily growing your skills and confidence in Kathak.

2. Semi-Classical & Bollywood Semi-classical and Bollywood dance bring together the grace of Indian classical styles with the energy and fun of popular music. My lessons are a mix of expressive movements, graceful choreography, and easy-to-follow steps that make dancing enjoyable and accessible for everyone. I focus on bringing out your personality in dance, helping you feel confident, expressive, and free. The classes can range from learning short choreographies for your favourite songs to exploring semi-classical moves that are rooted in tradition but easy to adapt to any stage. These sessions are perfect if you want to have fun, stay active, and express yourself while also picking up some graceful techniques. No prior dance experience needed, just your energy and willingness to move!
