About Athene

I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Cambridge, a passionate biologist and hold a PhD in Developmental Neurobiology from King's College London in addition to my BSc in Psychology with Neuroscience. I am very enthusiastic about my topic and have published my research in top-tier journals.

I have a large amount of experience, having provided tutoring in biology and psychology from GCSE to degree level for 8 years, while also running tutorials and workshops with Biomedical Science, Natural Science, Medicine and Dentistry students as part of their taught degrees at King's College London and the University of Cambridge.

I care about making science accessible to everyone and have also previously mentored A-Level students from disadvantaged backgrounds with their university applications and personal statements for a period of 3 years via The Social Mobility Foundation.

I work with students of all abilities and my enthusiasm for science and psychology and approachable nature mean that I am able to put students at ease while quickly identify where they need help the most. I can help to break down complex topics and develop strong exam technique which allows students to feel confident in their knowledge and abilities.

About the lesson

I strongly believe that all students learn differently, and so my lessons vary from student to student as I adapt to individual needs. I support a wide range of students ranging from A-Level to PhD level, in topics as diverse as Biology, Psychology, Neuroscience, Cell and Developmental Biology and Data Analysis.

I usually like to identify where students are strong and where they need help in the first session, by going into a few previously agreed topics and talking to them about where they are at and what they would like to achieve. From there on I agree lesson topics together with the student. I often support students who require assignment-based coaching to accelerate their critical thinking and academic writing skills. All sessions are highly interactive, inquiry-based and a place where curiosity can unfurl and all questions are welcome.

My lessons may contain a taught component but I place a strong emphasis on problem questions. These are a great way of assessing whether topics have been fully understood, are an essential way of developing good exam technique and also help to remove fear of previously dreaded topics. Students often overlook their particular strengths and I also help to build confidence with regards to academic work, which I believe to be just as important as revising content.

I frequently work with Bachelors, Masters and PhD students who need coaching with regards to written work, helping them to develop the critical analysis skills essential for high marks, as well as data analysis where relevant.

I also provide mentoring and help with personal statements and preparation for university applications. Over the years I have developed a strong sense for what it is that university admissions tutors are looking for and can help students distil their passion, interest and academic abilities into a strong application.

I came to Athene for help with some of my postgraduate assignments in Psychology. She was quick to identify where I needed guidance and we were able to come up with a work plan which made things a lot less daunting. She also really helped me develop my ideas and think critically about the material. I was initially aiming for a 2:1 grade but was able to achieve a first so I was incredibly happy. Athene is a very committed and friendly tutor and I'm very grateful for her help.

Athene tutored me biology which got me back on track from a low b to an A and she made lessons fun enjoyable and engaging. We practiced multiple questions and if I wasn’t understanding anything she was ready and open to explain all the different types of topics to me. Thanks Athene !
