About Nicola

Hi, I'm Nicola!

I'm half British and half French, I went to the best bilingual school in France before coming back to the UK to study politics at Warwick University.

I have consistently got 1sts in my university essays and dissertation.

I've worked as a research assistant for my university tutor as part of a project to write an academic Oxford Press book.

I've been tutoring for 10 years now. My mother is an English teacher so she taught me how to tutor from a young age.

Based in London, I now run my own business, I play the drums, and I make the world's best hummus ;)

About the lesson

A quick tip for writing better in just 2 minutes.

Here's how most people write: "In fact, the train was green."

That's 6 words to say very little. Instead, say something about the train: "The green train went past."

Great, in fewer words you've already said more!

Now add:
- describer: what kind of train?
- action: what did it do?
- qualifier: how did it do that?
- specifier: when? where? how many?
- effect: what effect did it have on you or its surroundings?

Then you get something like this:

"Friday afternoon, the emerald green steam-train brutally tore through Coventry station, rattling the railway tracks and the ears of startled travellers."

The same is true of academic writing: write simply and concisely so that you can say more and better.
