About Karin

My name is Karin Hood. I have been supporting students with their literacy needs for over 5 years. I first started my career as an Education Assistant, supporting students with their academic needs in the classroom. After discovering a great need for literacy support within the school district I got my Orton Gillingham certification. Since then I have been working in the North Vancouver School District as a Learning Support specialist providing students with one on one literacy lessons. I have a passion for teaching children so private tutoring is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I am based in Kamloops and available to tutor students in person or online.

When i'm not working I enjoy gardening, horse riding, reading, and painting. I am known to have a happy, bubbly personality with a great sense of humor. I strongly believe that when learning is fun it is the most effective.

About the lesson

My Orton Gillingham/ Phonics based tutoring lessons are highly personalized, structured lessons that focus on building fundamental literacy skills such as reading and writing, grammar, spelling, printing, comprehension and more. This is the ideal tutor for elementary school aged children with Dyslexia.

When I first meet my clients I start with a series of assessments that indicate the clients specific needs. These assessments consist of phonological awareness, sound/ symbol relationships, spelling, and reading. Once assessments are complete I create a custom lesson plan for my clients based on their individual learning needs. My lessons are structured, explicit, fun, multisensory, and most importantly highly effective. A lesson will typically include phonological awareness games, spelling games and lessons, reading comprehension and decoding and much, much more.

The Orton Gillingham Method is researched based and proven to help children with Dyslexia learn to read and write. I have been teaching this method in the North Vancouver School District for over 5 years. I have a degree in Special Education from Capilano University as well as Orton Gillingham certification.
