About Ashley
Teaching guitar effectively means balancing rigorous technical development with nurturing each student’s creative voice and musical passions. I approach every lesson with the understanding that every player is unique, and I tailor instruction to your skill level, goals, and musical preferences.
Core technical skills like chord shapes, finger dexterity, strumming, scales, and rhythm form the backbone of my teaching, but I always make sure these fundamentals are practiced through songs and genres you love, keeping lessons engaging and relevant. My curriculum includes improvisation, songwriting, ear training, and music theory, providing a comprehensive musical education that encourages both skill and creativity. I use technology such as looping pedals and recording software to foster experimentation and provide immediate feedback, allowing you to hear your progress and explore tone and texture in real time.
For instance, a student who had never written music before ended up composing and performing multiple originals after a year, showing how blending creativity and technique builds confidence and musicianship. We set clear, attainable goals and craft practice routines that maintain motivation and avoid monotony.
Tone development and emotional communication are integral parts of my teaching; I work closely with phrasing, dynamics, articulation, and touch to help you develop a unique, emotionally resonant sound. Whether your focus is fingerstyle folk, jazz harmony, shoegaze atmospheres, or catchy pop tunes, I help you explore and refine your tone and style. My lessons aim to provide a nurturing and inspiring environment where you feel encouraged to experiment, learn, and enjoy your musical journey.

My guitar teaching approach focuses on nurturing both technical skills and artistic creativity in an encouraging, tailored environment. We start with essentials like posture, finger placement, strumming, and fluid chord changes, all linked to music styles and songs you enjoy—whether that’s folk, blues, pop, or rock.
I integrate practical music theory to help you understand how chords relate, how scales are structured, and how rhythm shapes your playing’s feel and flow. Communication and flexibility are core to my method; I continuously adapt lessons to your progress and personal goals to keep you inspired and challenged. To enhance practice, I use chord diagrams, backing tracks, and loopers, which foster timing, improvisation, and musical expression.
Guitar should be a source of joy and personal expression, so I encourage patience, celebrate progress, and share motivating stories of musicians and students who have flourished through perseverance. In addition to technique, I teach tone development, stage presence, sight-reading, and improvisation, providing a rounded musical education. Whether you want to play casually or professionally, I’m here to support your growth as a confident and expressive guitarist.
