About Anja
Hi, I’m currently an Electrical Engineering student with a strong passion for helping others learn. I’ve always found tutoring to come naturally to me, especially when it comes to explaining things in a simple, clear, and patient way. Over the past two years, while working as an au pair, I gained valuable experience helping students improve their Afrikaans, which really grew my confidence as a tutor.
I’m working towards putting myself through university, and I realized that tutoring is the perfect way to do that — by earning an income through something I genuinely enjoy. I take my work seriously, I’m reliable and well-prepared, and I always aim to create a comfortable learning environment where students feel supported and confident to ask questions.

My approach to tutoring is relaxed, interactive, and focused on building real confidence in the language. I’m fluent in both English and Afrikaans, so I can comfortably explain concepts in either language depending on what the student needs. While we will definitely work on reading and writing, my main focus is helping students actually speak Afrikaans and feel comfortable using it in everyday situations.
A typical lesson with me starts with a quick recap of the previous lesson, followed by a bit of new theory. After that, we spend most of the time talking through the work together so I can see how well you understand it and help you improve naturally. I believe learning a language should feel practical and enjoyable, not stressful or overly formal.
What makes my lessons a bit different is that I don’t just teach words and sentences — I bring in the culture as well. We might learn through Afrikaans folktales, chat about rugby news, talk through how to make a proper braaibroodjie, or even practice how to handle a real-life conversation with someone who doesn’t speak English. The goal is to make you feel confident using Afrikaans in real situations.
My lessons are aimed mainly at older students, roughly between the ages of 10 and 60, whether you’re a complete beginner or just looking to improve your fluency and confidence.
