About Amanda O’Connell

Hello, my name is Amanda! I am an aspiring educator pursuing a major in Elementary Education with a specialization in ESL at the University of Texas at San Antonio. With a passion for teaching and a commitment to fostering inclusive and engaging learning environments, I am dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of young learners.

As a student teacher, I have gained valuable hands-on experience in the classroom, honing my teaching skills and implementing effective strategies to support student growth and development. With a year of teaching experience under my belt, I have cultivated a deep understanding of curriculum design, differentiated instruction, and classroom management techniques.

Beyond my academic pursuits, I have a zest for exploration and cultural immersion. During my free time, you can often find me traveling, where I not only get to experience diverse cultures but also broaden my perspective on education. My experiences have given me a unique understanding of the importance of multiculturalism and language acquisition in the classroom.

In addition to travel, reading is one of my favorite pastimes. I am an avid reader, constantly seeking new knowledge and immersing myself in different literary worlds. I believe that reading not only enriches the mind but also sparks curiosity and critical thinking skills in both myself and my future students.

With a deep passion for education, a love for exploration, and a dedication to lifelong learning, I am committed to making a positive impact in the lives of my students. I strive to create an inclusive and engaging learning environment that fosters growth, curiosity, and a love for learning.

As a tutor for elementary math, my approach is to create an engaging and supportive learning environment that caters to the unique needs and learning styles of each student. Here's how I typically structure my teaching method and techniques:

Assessing the student's needs: I start by understanding the student's current level of understanding and identifying any specific areas where they may be struggling. This helps me tailor my approach and focus on their individual needs.

Breaking down concepts: I break down complex math concepts into simpler, more manageable parts. This helps students grasp the foundational principles before moving on to more advanced topics. I use visual aids, manipulatives, and real-life examples to make the concepts more relatable and understandable.

Interactive learning: I believe in active learning, where students actively participate and engage in the learning process. I encourage students to ask questions, solve problems on their own, and explain their reasoning. I provide guidance and support along the way, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Reinforcement and practice: Regular practice is crucial for mastering math skills. I assign practice exercises and provide feedback to help students reinforce their understanding. I may also use online resources, educational games, and interactive tools to make practice sessions more enjoyable and effective.

Regular assessments: I incorporate regular assessments to gauge the student's progress. These can be in the form of quizzes, short tests, or even informal discussions to check for understanding. Assessments help identify areas that require further attention and enable me to adjust my teaching strategies accordingly.

A typical lesson plan for an elementary math tutoring session could include the following:

Warm-up activity: I begin with a short warm-up activity to review previously learned concepts or introduce a new topic related to the lesson.

Concept introduction: I introduce the main concept or skill of the lesson using a combination of visual aids, examples, and simple explanations. I make sure to relate the concept to real-life scenarios whenever possible.

Guided practice: I provide step-by-step guidance to help students apply the concept. I work through examples with them, encouraging them to ask questions and actively participate in the problem-solving process.

Independent practice: Once the student has grasped the concept, I assign practice problems that gradually increase in difficulty. This allows students to apply their knowledge independently and develop confidence in their abilities.

Review and feedback: Towards the end of the lesson, I review the student's work and provide constructive feedback. I address any misconceptions and reinforce correct approaches. I also summarize the key points covered during the session.

What sets me apart as a tutor is my ability to adapt to each student's learning style, pace, and specific needs. I believe in creating a supportive and positive learning environment, where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I strive to foster a growth mindset, emphasizing that mistakes are an essential part of the learning process and an opportunity for growth.

My lessons are designed for elementary school students who are seeking assistance in math. This may include students from various grade levels within the elementary school system. Whether students are struggling with foundational concepts or aiming to advance their skills, my teaching approach can be tailored to accommodate different levels of proficiency.
