About Brandi

I am a classroom educator with a Master’s in Education and 12 years of experience working with elementary students. Throughout my career, I have been consistently evaluated as a highly effective teacher, recognized for my professionalism, reliability, and strong instructional practices. I am patient, organized, and committed to creating a supportive learning environment where students feel confident, encouraged, and motivated to grow.

About the lesson

In my tutoring sessions, I will work with your learner on their reading fluency and comprehension. Good fluency is something that takes practice and repetition. This class is *flexible to exactly what your child needs in literacy* -- whether it is learning to read in kindergarten, or if they are in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade and needing support with fluency and/or comprehension, this class will work for them! This class is great if your child is reading below grade level. I will meet them where they are at and build from there. Younger learners (ages 4-6) should know most or all of the sounds that the letters make before beginning this class. The following two types of texts are used in this class, dependent on your child's literacy needs: --"Learning to read" (also known as 'Decodable Readers) These are used for beginner readers that are working on blending individual sounds, digraphs, trigraphs, vowel teams, and other spellings to learn how to read. --"Reading to learn" These are for learners who mastered most phonics rules that are now practicing to enhance their fluency and comprehension of stories. If you would prefer I meet with your learner 2 or 3 times per week rather than 1, feel free to book additional sessions at the date and time of your choosing. If your child is reading at least 1 grade/year below their current grade level, I recommend at least 2 sessions per week. While every individual session will benefit your learner, good fluency is something that takes a lot of practice and repetition. Therefore, you will see progress with your learner's reading skills over a series of sessions rather than a single meeting. I have a teacher subscription to Reading A to Z where I have access to thousands of digital books. A new book will be presented on my screen in each class. In some classes where time permits, 2 stories will be read. I will listen to your learner read and make corrections as needed. I will make sure your learner is reading words with those tricky spelling rules and phonics patterns correctly. I have a digital pen where I will be marking to direct the student's attention or to correct errors when reading. If there are certain phonics or reading rules that your learner is missing while reading, we will pause the reading to learn how to tackle those rules to be able to read words that contain the missed rules. --> In addition, I will ask your learner reading comprehension questions and completing comprehension activities to make sure that they understand the book being read and not simply just 'reading.' Every digital book used will be shared in the classroom after each session. These can be printed to continue practicing at home. Over time, your reader will be reading with more expression, fewer errors, and at a steady rate of a fluent reader! After a few sessions with your learner when I have a good understanding of what level your child is currently reading at, I will provide a fluency assessment with them where I will record their words per minute, words CORRECT per minute, and errors which will produce their accuracy/reading rate percentage. I will then conduct this same assessment (which takes only about 2-3 minutes of the 30-minute sessions) to keep track of their progress and I will share those results with you after each session that has an assessment within it. **This is available for students reading at a FIRST GRADE level or higher. If I am working with a learner reading at a kindergarten level, we will begin these fluency checks once they reach my first-grade curriculum. If your learner is reading at or beyond a second-grade reading level, I will give a comprehension quiz to them at the end of every book that they read. I will provide the results to you in our classroom after each session. After each class, I will provide extension activities that are specifically about the book read in class. This is *optional* work for your learner to continue to practice literacy skills after our class together. I kindly require that in all of my classes students wear headphones. This helps learners focus immensely. I want your learner to be able to focus easily and get the most out of every minute of our time together. In addition, it also allows me to hear the pronunciation of specific sounds and words a lot clearer which is incredibly important. Thank you very much!
