About Nanette
I have a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a master's degree in Educational Technology. I began teaching 1st grade 34 years ago in Florida and moved to California in 1999 where I continued to teach 1st grade. I switched to 3rd grade for 4 years before becoming a literacy coach for the school district. After only 2 years as a literacy coach, my love of teaching young students brought me back to my roots and I remained teaching 1st grade for the past 14 years. Throughout this time, I have kept up with the latest research and honed my skills as a reading teacher.

I use hands-on, research-based methods such as Elkonin boxes or poppers to break words into sounds and orthographic mapping to help students connect letters to sounds and build high frequency words recognition. A typical lesson would consist of instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. The lessons are intended for students at the beginning (kindergarten - 1st grade) stages of learning to read.
