About Sebastian

I am a native English speaker and an experienced teacher, mentor and trainer working with young people and adults. I am a smalltime published poet and write in English and French.
I love to learn and am constantly trying to improve my own language knowledge through making conversation, reading, and language puzzle-games - expect to be asked questions all the time through my curiosity!

My experience includes mentoring university and high school students with their learning and personal development, I have tutored in maths and photography, and assisted the learning of young people with additional needs. All this to say that my experience is in meeting learners where they are at.

I have also trained primary, secondary and college teachers. This was in using restorative practice, an approach to relating to others, centred on honest communcation, hearing contrary perspectives and helping people connect when there is conflict. And all this to say - We will learn and work together in an open, non-judgemental way, in which I hope to offer you the experience of being seen, heard and connected to.

If you’re looking for a curious, relaxed, and focused tutor who will listen to you, share their sense of humour with you, and cheerlead your development, I’d be very happy to meet you.

About the lesson

Want to feel more confident speaking English?

I welcome learners of all ages and stages, for example, younger or older learners between A1 and B2 - Welcome!

My goal is for you to leave each of our sessions feeling that you have used English, learned something useful and taken another step forward. Our biggest resource together will be the media you enjoy, whether that be literature, music, film, etc. I believe daily exposure to our preferred media in a new language is a great learning practice.

How will you learn?
I generally plan sessions of 60 minutes of activities, though we can make an arrangement work with your restrictions/preferences if need be. Our sessions will be held in English.

I will bring a piece of media forward in each session for us to learn with, be that fictional writing, a review article, a fun news clipping, song lyrics, etc. You are welcome to bring something for us to cover if you want.

Using a mixture of solo and team work, we will digest that session's media, seek to understand it, explore any new vocabulary or expressions, and observe specific grammar in context, before engaging ourselves in a creative exercise (writing/speaking) to consolidate what we have covered.

Our sessions will provide opportunity to practice several areas of English together:
Speaking — expressing your ideas and developing confidence in conversation (I promise you, you will be speaking with ease and a smile before you know it)
Reading — understanding and discussing different types of texts (this is important!)
Listening — developing your ability to understand spoken English (we will both read out loud and each session listen to English based on the session's media)
Writing — practicing written expression and exploring different styles (you will be able to practice a variety of informal and formal styles)
Grammar — understanding how grammar works and practicing it in context (our aim for you is achieve a competent foundation of grammar at your level and then continue)
Vocabulary — learning useful words and expressions for everyday use and otherwise (the more vocabulary we learn, the richer the language becomes for us, I am excited to learn with you)

I’m also happy to help with written homework or other formal writing and speaking tasks you have coming up (emails, test and interview preparations for example).

I am available between 14:00 and 17:00 GMT+1, Monday to Friday. (I check any superprof messages in this time)
