About Shannon
Shannon's passion is helping her students express themselves with clarity and confidence, and her MA in Applied Linguistics (Canada Institute of Linguistics at TWU) and BA in English Literature (East Tennessee State University) give her a solid theoretical foundation for achieving that goal. More importantly, over 10 years of English and ESL teaching and tutoring for learners from kindergarten to retirement age has taught her how to translate her knowledge into engaging, personalized instruction that helps students meet their specific learning goals. Shannon has tutored on writing and presentation skills from first-year composition through master's theses, taught learners ranging from young children in a South Asian orphanage to successful business executives and retirees, and quickly advanced into teacher training and even academic management while teaching abroad.

My greatest strength isn't my Master's degree in language arts; instead, my greatest strength is my ability to truly listen to your intended meaning and help you express it better in whatever format you're working with!
A typical session with me looks like this:
- An initial introduction where we talk about your goals
- Working together on a task, whether that's an essay to edit, a conversation to understand, an outline for a presentation, or a specific pronunciation skill
- Lots of questions throughout! I frequently ask questions like "do you mean...?" and "this phrase makes me think ____. Is that your intention?"
-Plenty of specific, actionable feedback. If our task is written or text-based, I'll ask about word choice, sentence structure, paragraph order, and maybe correct some punctuation. If our task is verbal or oral, I'll give you suggestions for speed or rhythm, specific pronunciation techniques, intonation awareness, and even body language awareness.
I'm so excited to meet you and help you with any element of English you need help with! I've worked with native English speakers on every step of essays for school, English learners who want to improve generally for conversation, and all sorts of people who need support with workplace language and vocabulary specific to a certain job.
