About Kyan

I am currently in Matric and have a genuine interest in helping younger learners grow in confidence and improve their English skills. I am friendly, extremely patient, encouraging and supportive, and I understand that every learner works at a different pace and may need concepts explained in different ways.

I also have personal experience with ADHD, so I understand many of the challenges that can come with concentration, motivation, organisation, staying focused and feeling overwhelmed by schoolwork. Because of this, I try to be especially patient and flexible, and I aim to make lessons feel manageable rather than stressful.

I have experience around children with different learning needs. I have a family member with Down syndrome, and I have also helped many neurodivergent children with a wide variety of tasks and challenges. I previously attended a school that focused on small groups and supporting neurodivergent learners, which gave me further exposure to different learning styles and the importance of individual attention.

I am also a qualified lifeguard through Lifesaving South Africa, which included first aid training. This has helped me develop responsibility, calmness and the ability to respond appropriately in situations where care and attention are important. I also volunteered during the April/May 2022 KZN floods, which gave me valuable experience in helping others and working in challenging circumstances.

As a tutor, I aim to create a relaxed and positive learning environment where learners feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and learning at their own pace. My goal is to make lessons clear, encouraging and suited to each learner’s individual needs, while helping them become more confident and independent in their schoolwork.

About the lesson

I offer personalised English tutoring for learners in Grades 1–9, with lessons based on the CAPS curriculum. My approach is patient, supportive and adapted to each learner’s individual needs. I focus on explaining concepts in a simple and practical way so that learners understand the work rather than simply memorising it.

Lessons can include reading and comprehension, literacy, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, creative writing, paragraph and essay writing, homework support, revision, and test or exam preparation. I teach in English and aim to create a comfortable environment where learners feel confident asking questions and working through areas they find challenging.

A typical lesson begins by identifying what the learner needs help with, followed by a clear explanation of the topic. We then work through examples and activities together before the learner attempts similar work independently. I can also use schoolwork, worksheets, past papers and CAPS-aligned material to support what is being taught at school.

My lessons are aimed at learners from Grade 6 through Grade 9, whether they need extra support, want to improve their marks, prepare for an assessment, or simply become more confident in English. Lessons are adjusted according to the learner’s age, ability, learning style and pace.

I also have some experience working with children who are neurodivergent and with children with Down syndrome. This has helped me understand the importance of patience, clear communication and adapting activities to suit different learning needs.
