About Mike
I have been teaching high school and college students for over 20 years and have been highly successful in improving students' writing skills, passing rates, and college success. Many former high school students who have gone on to college have let me know how prepared they felt for college writing.

I use a process based approach, teaching writing as a series of drafts instead of a one-shot finished product. When possible, I let students choose their topic. Commenting on papers has always been my most effective individualized teaching tool.

I’ve know Mike for almost 30 years and he has worked for us as a climbing guide and instructor. In addition to working with adults, he has taught our youth climbing camps for years. He is the favorite instructor of our teens. He has a great sense of humor, is a tremendous instructor and is passionate about climbing and working with youth. He is compassionate, understanding and helpful.
My daughter had the great luck to not only have Mike for an English teacher, but also for an advisor and mentor. Mike has a great rapport with his students. He mentorship style incorporates strong academic support and encouragement for students to have confidence in their own abilities. You truly won't find better than Mike!
You will not find a more brilliant, patient, and caring instructor.
As a sulky and an excruciatingly shy teenager, I benefited greatly from Mike’s individualized teaching style. His classes encouraged critical thinking skills and creativity, which set me up for success in my undergraduate and master’s degree programs. In short, I would not be where I am today—a UC Berkeley communications director—if it were not for Mike’s genuine dedication to his students.I first studied with Mr Kaserman in 8th grade and was in his classes for 4 years. Mike is a teacher who knows how to listen to his students and cater to their needs, he's open minded and soft-spoken, but he knows when to be serious. If Mike was a professor at my college, I'd sign up for his class in a heartbeat.
Mike taught me high school English. I'm now a professional journalist.
Mike was always kind and supportive, and he made the challenges he set for students feel fun rather than stressful. His classes were rigorous, energizing and inspiring. He is a superb teacher. I recommend him without hesitation.Mike is extremely relatable and caring towards his students. He has a compassionate attitude while making sure the job gets done. Mike guided me in writing papers and gave feedback that could be easily applied. After learning with Mike, I came a long way in my writing skills and became more confident in my ability to deliver a message on paper.
Mike was a fantastic teacher at my high school. He's a super Superprof. He's teaching style is very welcoming and productive. I took a lot away from his classes that I wasn't expecting to, most of the things I learned from his classes are still with me now. I 10/10 recommend Mike Kaserman.
He's been a teacher and guiding for a long time and is patient people.
Mike Kaserman helped me when I was struggling with math. He understands that each student learns in a different way and tailors his lessons to the individual. Mike is a great man and great teacher.
Mike was my English professor for two years when I was in high school. The mentorship he provided has stayed with me throughout my academic career. Thanks to the writing skills he helped me to develop in high school, I had no issue writing undergraduate level papers. Even now, those honed writing skills are getting me through my graduate degree!
Absolutely! I worked with Mike for several years; and in that time he became my regular go to, when facing challenges or when I needed support or ideas in my classroom.
When I was a cynical teenager, Mike helped me to appreciate the deeper meaning in classic literature. He has a unique ability to explain the most complex concepts in a way that anyone can understand. The professional writing skills he helped me to develop throughout high-school are the reason I was able to have a successful career supervising business correspondence before I even attended college. You will not find a better instructor.
I had Mike for a teacher in highschool each year. He's a compassionate guy and I always felt that my sometimes strange way of expressing things was welcome, and he would come to my level and make sure he understood what I was saying before explaining a possibility to speak more fairly and so on. This was huge for me, because I didn't always know why I was offending people. His teaching style felt to me to be one part lecture, one part reading, and one part writing which for me always felt balanced, and was willing to be flexible at times where students would struggle in one way of learning. I would call his style balanced, flexible and at times even lenient, so long as you're not stepping on his or anyone else's time. I felt more respected to ask or share my piece, in Mike's classroom than I've felt previously in my whole life. There's nobody I would rather have as a professor than Mike.
Mike Kaserman is my former English and Creative Writing teacher, every day he gave us well detailed kind critiques on our poetry and short stories. I was always encouraged by him to write more poems and take risks when it came to short stories. There was never a dull day with Kaserman. I always felt like his class was a calm space where I could collect my thoughts and be myself and he was always there to lend a helping hand.
Mike was my teacher for a few years in highschool. I would be very hard pressed to find a more compassionate, intellectual, and mentally flexible teacher. He is great at meeting any person at whatever level they are, neurotypical or otherwise, and treating everyone with respect. I never felt dumb or talked down to. He's still someone I think of often in my adult life as a positive influence and someone who challenged me when I found little mental challenge in school. I would recommend Mike as a teacher to anyone.
Mike Kasserman has tremendous experience teaching English literature he was responsible for not only my education but also my safety on many life changing adventures. He helped me to understand, appreciate and create literature and poetry. He has traveled the world and he has a sophisticated knowledge of many cultures.
I was Mike's student for 5 years between 1998-2003.I’ve taken many classes from Mike and they still sit with me today! He’s very compassionate towards his students and goes above and beyond to make sure they understand the work and improve. I very much enjoyed my time learning from him and would highly recommend him!
Mike Kaserman was my high school teacher for English, creative writing, and algebra. In all of his classes, he was not only great at helping me understand the material but he also helped me achieve the ability to teach myself. I'm very grateful to have had him as a teacher. He was a critical piece in starting my journey as a life-long learner.
Mike Kaserman was my English teacher most of my high school years. He may have taught me English, but he mentored me for adult life. He gave me patience and friendship when I needed it. He also gave constructive criticism in a way that made me feel like I was being taught to understand why something did or didn’t work in a piece of writing rather than simply being told it wasn’t good enough. Mike understands that each person is their own unique self and each person may need to be taught a little differently. He does this without making you feel singled out. Mike is a fantastic teacher and an even better friend. He has a lot he can teach you with literature and wisdom if you let him!
Mr Mike Kasserman was my English/Creative Writing teacher in my 12th year of highschool. He is an upstanding teacher not only is he informative and thorough with his teachings, he also has a rare patience that ive only seen in a handful of teachers growing up which makes learning from him so much nicer and less stressful. I recommend Mike in any teaching job and they should be so lucky to have him. Truly a wonderful leader, mentor and person.
To whom this may concern! I HIGHLY recommend Mike Kasserman to any parent looking to tutor their children! He is very professional, personable, patient and like able and is a wonderful asset for any parent looking to aid in their child’s education!
Sincerely
Mark TurnbowI had Mike Kasserman as my English/literature, Creative Writing, and Philosophy teacher at East Hollywood High. Mike is probably the smartest, most levelheaded, kind and curious man I have ever met. I have now gone through all of four years of college as well as an extra to your Boot Camp for coding, and have never come across a teacher or professor that did more for me than Mike.
I was always a good writer, but I never really admit it to myself. Mike brought me into the spotlight, shut off all of my papers to his classes (even to classes after I graduated as a example of what they should do). Mike gave me courage, and self-respect. He helped me realize that just because I don’t think I’m comfortable with something I’m good at doesn’t mean I shouldn’t do it.
I know with full certainty that I will always consider Mike Kasserman the greatest teacher I have ever had, and one of the greatest man I have the pleasure of knowing and learning from.Mike was among my favorite teachers I ever had. He made learning English fun (even the intricate boring parts). You can tell he loves teaching, as any time I'd ask a question, or misunderstood a lesson, he would take the time to explain it to me in whatever way worked, and then assure that I did understand it before moving on. He made it a point to make sure everyone was learning, and no one fell behind. When I was in High School, I took his creative writing class multiple times, despite having all of my English credits done well in advance; I simply enjoyed his class. Mike did help inspire me to become a writer, but more importantly, when looking back and remembering his lessons, I become inspired to KEEP writing. For anyone trying to become better at English, and enjoy themselves while doing it, I highly recommend Mike.
Mike was my teacher in high school, he was by far my favorite teacher. He knows how to keep you engaged all while making learning easy and fun. He knows how to ask comprehensive questions to stretch your mind. I would recommend him over and over.
