About Emily
I graduated with First Class Honors in English from the University of Birmingham, and I’ve always been passionate about the subject. My goal as a tutor is to inspire students to enjoy English as much as I do, while giving them the tools and confidence to succeed. I’ve gained a wide range of experience tutoring in the UK for the past five years, working with primary-aged children to those preparing for major exams. I also spent two years volunteering in a primary school, which gave me a strong foundation for working with younger learners. Over this time, I’ve seen how much progress students can make when they feel supported, motivated, and encouraged. Parents have often shared how much of a difference tutoring has made, highlighting my patience, clear communication, and ability to inspire interest. Above all, I want to make literature and language accessible and enjoyable. My own favorite book, Pride and Prejudice, became a passion of mine when I studied it as a teenager and I hope to help others discover the same excitement and connection.

I recognise that every student has their own unique learning style, so I tailor each lesson to suit the individual. With previous pupils, I’ve found it most effective to structure sessions around the areas they want to focus on. This not only strengthens their overall understanding of the subject, but also makes the process more engaging, since they feel invested in what we’re working on.
In preparation, I take time to familiarise myself with the material - reading extracts, articles, and related content - before selecting suitable resources such as worksheets or essay questions. When appropriate materials aren’t available, I create my own. I also like to incorporate recurring exercises from week to week, as this provides a clear way to measure progress and gives pupils confidence through a familiar structure.
Above all, I aim to create an environment where students feel comfortable and in control of their learning. By giving them choice and ownership, lessons become more collaborative, encouraging productive discussions and fostering active, meaningful learning.
